Kurt Crosland, Lauren Boyle Close Out New Zealand States With Victories

WELLINGTON, New Zealand, October 3. IN what proved to be a productive week for New Zealand, with age groupers and veterans alike turning in strong performances, the vets had the last laugh with world champion Lauren Boyle and Kurt Crosland both tracking down victories at the New Zealand State Short Course Championships.

Boyle finished the meet with triumphs in the 200-meter, 400-meter and 800-meter freestyle swims after an extended break following her outstanding performances at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona. Boyle overtook Samantha Lee in the 200 today for the win with a 1:56.17.

“I’m pretty happy with how I’ve done but it is a mental challenge to get back into the competitive mindset after a break,” said Boyle. “I’m pretty tired on the last day of the competition so I had no idea how it would go. I just wanted to feel comfortable in the back end and come home strong and I think I did that quite well.”

Crosland, meanwhile, just missed the national record in the 200-meter backstroke today with a 1:54.02. The win provided him with his fifth title of the meet, having prevailed in the 50, 100 and 200 backstrokes as well as the 100 and 200 IMs.

“My plan was to smash the third 50m and see what I had left in the tank, but unfortunately I just missed that record so next time I’m going to have a crack at it,” said Crosland. “Definitely the podium is the main goal for me so that’s going to be in the back of my mind training the whole time.”
