Kristy, Angel Sparkle at Southern Regional Champs

Kristy Kowal, the American record-holder in the short course 100 and 200 breaststroke, turned in some impressive times at the Southern Regional (Region III) Senior Long Course Championships in Athens, Georgia, July 13-16.

Kowal turned in a lifetime best–swimming unrested–in the 200 IM, clocking 2:15.78, just edging Maggie Bowen (2:17.10). She took both breaststrokes, turning in a 2:26.31 in the double century and 1:09.23 in the 100.

Thirty-three year-old mom Angel Martino showed she's going to be a contender at Olympic Trials, taking the 50 free in 25.65 and the 100 fly in 59.46.

NCAA champ Courtney Shealey edged Martino in the 100 free, 56.05 to 56.10, then came back to win the 100 back in an impressive 1:02.39 ahead of Amanda Adkins (1:03.00).

Janelle Atkinson, Swimming World's female "high School Swimmer of the Year" was a double winner, taking the 400 and 800 freestyle events in 4:13.66 and 8:35.97. Magda Dyszkiewicz, second in the 400 and 800, won the 1500 in a solid 16:30.50.

Rada Owen downed Atkinson to take the 200 free in 2:02.51; Dynamo's Elizabeth Hill took the 200 fly in 2:17.62; Amanda Adkins won the 200 back in 2:15.08; and Maggie Bowen annexed the 400 IM in 4:52.17.

Beau Wiebel swam to impressive wins in both the 200 (2:05.39) and 400 IM (4:26.76).

Elvin Chia was another double winner, taking both breaststrokes, in 1:02.59 and 2:16.36.

Bolles' Jorge Carral was the only men's triple winner, touching first in the 400 (3:56.20), 800 (8:12.63) and 1500 free (15:55.38).

Scott Tucker looked strong in taking the 100 free in 50.44, with John Stratman second in 50.72. The 50 went to South Africa's Brendon Dedekind in a swift 22.51, with Stratman second again in 22.96. Worl champion Bill Pilczuk was third (23.02).

Marc Lindsay swept the backstrokes, edging Michael Gilliam in the 100, 57.03 to 57.18, and racking up a four-second victory in the 200 (2:01.51).

Nate Boyle and Clay Kirkland tied for the win in the 200 free at 1:52.74. Venezuela's Oswaldo Quevedo took the 100 fly in 55.08, out-touching Joel Shapiro (55.23) while Jeff Somensatto edged Branden Cover in the 200 fly 2:03.31 to 2:03.41.
