Kovacs, Risztov Are Triple Winners at Hungarian Nationals

By Norbert Agh

BUDAPEST, June 28. OLYMPIC and world champion Agnes Kovacs swept all three women's breaststroke events at the Hungarian National swimming championships, held in Budapest last weekend.

Kovacs, 19, who won the 200m breast in Sydney, took the same event here in a strong 2:26.78, then added the 50 (32.95) and 100m breast (1:09.13).

Eva Risztov was also a triple winner, taking the 400 IM in a national record 4:45.22. The 16 year-old also emerged triumphant in the 400 (4:17.38) and 800m free (8:43.40).

Tamas Kerekjarto, who swims for the USC Trojans, won both men's individual medley events with strong efforts: 2:02.85 in the 200 and 4:21.12 in the 400.

Attila Zubor won both freestyle sprints, taking the 50 in a ho-hum 22.96 and the 100 in a much swifter 49.69, despite having no opposition to speak of.

Another double winner was Zsolt Gaspar, who also swims for USC – in his case, the University of South Carolina – during the school year. Zsolt bolted to wins in the 50 (24.60) and 100m butterfly (53.63).

Viktor Bodrogi was another men's double winner turning in almost identical times in his two winning efforts. Bodrogi topped the field in the 200m back (2:00.38) and 2200 fly (2:00.44).
