Klochkova Takes Two on First Day of Rio World Cup Meet

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, February 7. YANA Klochkova scored two big wins last night on the first day of the three-day FINA World Cup meet in Rio de Jameiro. The meet in Rio is the eighth and final stop on the 2003-04 World Cup circuit.

Klochkova, 21, the pride of Ukraine, scored her first victory with a decisive win in the 200 meter backstroke. She clocked 2:09.40 to 2:12.03 by 17 year-old Jenny Mensing of Germany.

Her second win was a lot tougher as she faced a stiff challenge from the USA's Amanda Beard. Trailing by 1.85 seconds halfway through the race, Beard cut more than a second off that lead on the breaststroke leg. She kept charging on the freestyle leg, cutting the difference between herself and the Olympic champion in this event with every stroke. But Klochkova held on to win in a seasional best 2:09.75 to Beard's 2:10.03, a lifetime best.

The splits:

Klochkova 28.45 1:01.02 1:39.23 2:09.75
Beard 29.06 1:02.87 1:39.95 2:10.03

Beard had enough left to win impressively in the 100 breast, as her 1:06.53 was more than three seconds faster than Germany's Sonja Helbig in second place (1:09.83).

Beard was only one of two Americans to win this evening. Mark Gangloff was the other, as he out-touched Brazil's Eduardo Fischer, 27.63 to 27.65 in the men's 50 breast.

Argentina's world champion Jose Meolans had the best men's swim, clocking 47.69 to win the 100 free, just off his seasonal best of 46.71. Trinidad's (and Auburn's) George Bovell was second in 48.81. Bovell later won the 100 IM in 54.35.

Brazil matched the USA with two winning performances. In the 50 free,
Flavia Delaroli nipped teammate Rebeca Gusmao by four-hundredths, touching in 24.83. In prelims, Gusmao equaled Delaroli's South American mark of 24.81, setting up the dramatic showdown tonight.

Romania's Camelia Potec was the only other double winner, coming from behind to take the 200 free in an excellent 1:55.81 over Sweden's Johanna Sjoberg (1:56.47) and the 800 in 8:29.37.

Romania wound up with five gold medals tonight as Dragos Coman won the 400 free (3:44.54), Razvan Florea the 100 back (53.35) and Ioan Gherghel the 200 fly (1:55.64).
