BATON ROUGE – Kirkland Mawae, a senior swimmer who preps at Dunham School in Baton Rouge and swims for Crawfish Aquatics, has committed to Wingate University.

Kirkland Mawae, a senior from the Dunham School and Crawfish Aquatics has committed to Wingate University.

“Mawae is a relative newcomer to the sport, and recently dedicated himself full time to swimming in Dec. 2013,” Crawfish Aquatics head coach Jayme Cramer said. “Since that time, his times have improved exponentially and his upside based on size and genetics is only looking up.”

Cramer definitely knows what he is talking about as he is a world champion in his own right with wins as part of the 800 free relay at the 2005 and 2007 World Championships.

Mawae’s father, Kevin, was a star offensive lineman at LSU and All Pro in the NFL for the Seahawks, Jets and Titans. His son stands at 6-1 and is still growing. Before focusing on swimming last December, Kirkland was also a National and International competitor in Irish dancing placing at all competitions.

“When I got to Wingate, I fell in love with the campus,” Mawae wrote about his commitment on CollegeSwimming.com. “The family atmosphere that the team carried was what pulled me in, though. I fit in with the team, and they were so accepting and fun to be around. I also feel [Coach Kirk Sanocki] really knows what he is doing. I can’t wait to be a Bulldog next year!”

Although he’s still growing into the sport, Mawae’s best swims have been in the backstroke thus far with some time drops in the free, breast and IM races.

Here are some of his time drops as provided by Cramer.
