Kenyon vs. Ohio State and Ohio Northern

GAMBIER, Ohio, November 2. THE Kenyon College men's swim team sent some swimmers to Columbus to face the Ohio State Buckeyes, while the rest of the group stayed home in the KAC Natatorium to battle the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University. As expected, the Lords defeated the Polar Bears, 140-99, but fell to the Division I Buckeyes, 155-42.
Against Ohio State, the Lords were swept in all 13 events contested. The best individual finishes turned in by Kenyon swimmers came from Nathaniel Smith (Knoxville, TN/Central) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:35.18) and 500-yard freestyle (4:43.33), as well as Alex Stoyel (London, England/St. Paul's) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.41). All three of those times were good for second-place. Michael Northcutt (Charleston, WV/George Washington) and David Lazarus (Moens, France/Foundation of International) followed up with third-place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke, respectively.

At home against Ohio Northern, freshman Andrew Butler (Skillman, NJ/The Pennington School) had a huge meet, winning three events. Butler first won the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:57.49), then won the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.69), and capped off the evening with a victory in the 500-yard freestyle (4:54.54).

Another KC freshman, James Martin (Little Rock, AR/Little Rock Central), also rang up three wins. He swam a leg on both of the Lords' winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams. On his own, Martin chalked up one more win in the 50-yard freestyle (22.66).

On the women's side, after dropping a pair of dual meets to Division I opponents last week, the Kenyon College women's swim team bounced back against the visiting Ohio Northern University Polar Bears. The Ladies won 10 of 11 swim events and posted a 148-84 victory.
Kenyon (1-2) used its depth to pencil in nine different winners in the individual events. The other event win came in the meet-opening 200-yard medley relay. Brigid Leavy (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North), Danielle Seltzer (Belmont, MA/Belmont), Catarina Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Sao Luis) and Lauren Goettsch (Austin, MN/Austin) combined to pull off a first-place showing in a time of 1:54.52.

Goettsch and Oliveira also won individual events for the Ladies. Goettsch took the 50-yard freestyle in 25.22 seconds, while Oliveira turned in a winning time of 2:15.04 in the 200-yard butterfly.

Another Kenyon winner, sophomore Emily Jacobssen (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) notched an NCAA Division III 'B' cut by taking the 200-yard backstroke in 2:08.41.

Ohio Northern (2-1) won the two diving competitions and took the 400-yard medley relay, an event Kenyon swam as an exhibition.

Special thanks to Kenyon for contributing this report.
