Kenyon Swimming and Diving Sweeps Annual Rivalry Meet Against Denison

GRANVILLE – The Kenyon swimming and diving teams swept in-state and NCAA Division III rival Denison on Saturday morning, with the Lords winning 170-130 and the Ladies taking a 166-128 victory.

Celia Oberholzer and Mariah Williamson combined to win five events for Kenyon College Saturday morning as the team defeated Denison University 166-128 at the Trumbull Aquatics Center. It was the second win in as many meets for the 2014 NCAA runner-up team.

The Ladies started the day with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. With a time of 1:44.81, the team of Oberholzer, Hannah Cooper, Katie Kaestner, and Jenner McLeod earned an NCAA B-cut qualifying time.

Williamson claimed the squad’s first individual win completing the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:15.57. She took the 200-yard freestyle race in 1:55.52 and the 500-yard freestyle with a B-cut time of 5:00.77.

Oberholzer helped Kenyon claim the 100-yard backstroke as she had an NCAA B-cut time of 57:22. She also went on to win the 200-yard backstroke in 2:07.38.

Kaestner had a pair of B-cut times in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events. The junior completed the 100-yard event with a time of 1:04.81 and the latter in 2:22.26.

Freshman Kanchi Desai’s 2:06.73 second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly was another NCAA B-cut qualifying time for the Ladies. Desai also took the top spot in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:10.68.

Cooper got in the mix with a victory in the 100-yard butterfly. The senior edged teammate Cecina Babich Morrow by a half second (57.91) for the win.

Maria Zarka rounded out Kenyon’s efforts in the one- and three-meter diving events. She claimed the one-meter with a score of 281.33 and the other by 304.65.

The Ladies are back in action when they’ll make the quick trip to Columbus to compete in the Ohio State University Invitational November 21.

In a dual meet at Denison University’s Trumbull Aquatics Center, the visiting Kenyon College men’s swimming and diving team rang up nine individual event wins and ran away with a 170-130 victory. Sophomore Trevor Manz was the Lords’ main point-scorer, as he logged three individual event wins and was a part of a relay win.

Manz started out his day by swimming a leg on the meet-opening 200-yard medley relay team. He joined Harrison Curley, Kevin Magee, and Austin Pu to post an NCAA ‘B’ cut and winning time of 1:32.77. Following that swim, Manz went on to collect wins in the 100-yard breast stroke (57.17), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:04.60), and the 200-yard individual medley (1:52.36). All three of those times met the NCAA ‘B’ cut, as well.

Curley, who was a part of that winning 200-yard medley relay team, also forged ahead to sweep the backstroke events. He won the 100 in a time of 51.51 and then took the 200 in a time of 1:51.54, which cleared the NCAA ‘B’ cut.

Other individual winners for Kenyon included David Perez in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:37.78), Austin Caldwell in the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.24), Austin Pu in the 50-yard freestyle (21.08), and Wes Manz in the 100-yard butterfly (51.15).

The Lords closed out the meet by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay in yet another NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 1:22.66. The Kenyon quartet was comprised of Caldwell, Pu, Joey Duronio, and Percy Gates.

Next up for the Lords is competition in the three-day Ohio State University Invitational, which will get underway Friday, November 21.

Denison Women’s Press Release

Denison suffered a 166-128 loss to Kenyon College from the Trumbull Aquatics Center in Granville, Ohio. That snapped a five-year winning streak against the Ladies in the annual dual meet clash.

The Big Red posted four event victories on Saturday and sophomore Carolyn Kane had a hand in three of those wins. Kane won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle and swam the anchor on the winning 200 free relay team. In the 50 free, Kane hit the wall in 23.52. In the 200 free, she bested teammate Ashley Yearwood with a time of 51.79. Yearwood touched in 53.33 seconds. Both of Kane’s swims were NCAA provisional qualifying times.

In the 200 free relay, Kane hit the water after 50-yard swims by Rima Jurgis, Yearwood and Maggie Pyett. Their time of 1:35.45 topped Kenyon by one second.

Denison’s other event win came in the 200 butterfly as first-year Halli Garza touched in 2:06.46 for the victory and a ‘B’ cut time. In the diving events, Sarah Lopez finished second in the 1-meter and 3-meter boards with scores of 259.05 and 239.18, respectively.

The Big Red also added provisional qualifying times in the 200 breaststroke and the 200 medley relay. In the 200 breast, Marissa Bednarek placed third in 2:23.84. She also swam on the 200 medley relay with Jurgis, Yearwood and Kane. The foursome touched in 1:45.92.

Denison will return to action on Dec. 4 for the three-day Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.

In the annual battle between national powerhouses, the Kenyon Lords picked up a 170-130 victory over Big Red at the Trumbull Aquatics Center in Granville, Ohio.

Despite the setback, Denison notched five victories against Kenyon in their final home meet in 2014.

The trio of senior Dan Hellman, junior Ryan Fleming and freshman Stuart Hohm combined for a trio of victories in the pool on Saturday. Hellman earned DU’s first win of the afternoon in the 200 butterfly. The senior completed the race in 1:55.77, 23 hundredths of a second ahead of freshman teammate Aaron Saccurato (1:56.00).

Fleming was victorious in the 100 freestyle after touching the wall in 46.34. Hohm picked up his win in the 500 free after finishing the race in 4:38.63. The Big Red freshman touched almost four seconds ahead of second-place David Perez of Kenyon. Hohm also had a runner-up performance in the 1,000-meter event with a time of 9:38.09.

For the second-straight year, senior diver Connor Dignan swept the diving events against Kenyon. Dignan posted a score of 371.10 on the 3-meter board and a score of 337.58 in the 1-meter event. Sophomore Max Levy took second on both boards with scores of 312.53 and 315.60 in the 3-meter and 1-meter events, respectively. Sophomore Brian Allen and junior Ben Lewis rounded out the top-three spots. Allen scored 311.48 points on the 3-meter board, while Lewis scored 302.03 in the 1-meter event.

The Big Red also posted provisional qualifying times in the 100 breast and 200 backstroke events. Senior Damon Rosenburg’s time of 57.30 garnered him second in the 100 breast, while Jack Lindell finished runner-up in the 200 back with a mark of 1:51.81.

Denison will take a one-month break from competition before returning at the Miami University Invitational on Dec. 4-6.
