Kenyon Quad Meet, Day Two

GAMBIER, Ohio, January 22. COMPETING against teams from three NCAA Division I institutions, the Kenyon College women's swimming and diving team held its own during a two-day quad meet that ended Saturday at the Kenyon Aquatics Center. The Ladies wound up in third place, but just 59 points away from the top spot.
That first-place standing belonged to the University of Cincinnati, which scored 549 points. Oakland University claimed second place with 507 points. Kenyon was third (490) and Ashland University took fourth place (164).

The Ladies stayed in the hunt due to their depth. Six different swimmers recorded top-three finishes Saturday. The best of the bunch was senior Lauren Brady (Tyngsboro, MA/Phillips Exeter), who was Kenyon's sole event-winner on the final day of competition. Brady notched her win in the 100-yard butterfly by clocking in with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 57.23.

Following up on that performance, sophomores Hannah Saiz (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh Senior) and Anna Connolly (Wayne, PA/Conestoga) claimed second-place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle, respectively. Saiz's time was 5:06.43 and Connolly's time was 52.48, another NCAA 'B' cut.

Taking bronze for Kenyon were freshman Syd Lindblom (Charlotte, NC/Providence Day) in the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.10), sophomore Kate Haller (Mentor, OH/Mentor) in the 100-yard backstroke (59.56), and senior Kati Meirs (Cream Ridge, NJ/Peddie) in the 400-yard individual medley (4:36.58). Meirs' time, while far from her best of the season, also cleared the NCAA 'B' cut.

In relay competition, Kenyon's 200-yard freestyle team took second place (1:37.98) and its 200-yard medley team took third place (1:49.06). Both Connolly and freshman Mary Bank (Union, KY/Ryle) swam a leg in each of those relay competitions.

The Kenyon College Lords swim team notched nine, top-three, event finishes Saturday morning, but that wasn't good enough to close the gap on the Division I Oakland University Golden Grizzlies, who expanded their lead from the previous night's competition and ran away with first place in a quad meet held at the Kenyon Aquatics Center.

Oakland, which had a 71-point lead over second-place Kenyon at the end of Friday night, closed out the scoring Saturday with 672 points. Kenyon maintained second place with 525 points, while Ashland University took third place (200.5) and the University of Cincinnati finished fourth (190.5).

The highlights for Kenyon were produced by seniors Collin Ohning (Greenville, SC/Christ Church Episcopal) and Andrew Butler (Skillman, NJ/The Pennington School). Ohning cranked out a first-place time of 57.30 in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Butler posted a winning time of 4:07.10 in the 400-yard individual medley. Junior Joseph Pysnik (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) was not far behind Butler. Pysnik claimed third place in the same race by hitting the wall in 4:09.23.

Among second-place event finishers for Kenyon were senior Michael Mpitsos (Newport, OR/Newport) and sophomore Jimmy Chapman (Sandusky, OH/Perkins). Mpitsos was runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke (50.93) and Chapman took the same placement in the 100-yard butterfly (50.90). Sophomore Nick Charriez (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) was third, just behind Mpitsos, in the 100 back (52.15), while senior David Somers (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard) rounded out Kenyon's individual top-three finishes with a third-place showing in the 100-yard freestyle (46.28).

Additionally, Somers, along with Ohning and Mpitsos, swam a leg on two Kenyon second-place relay teams. The Lords' 200-yard freestyle team clocked in at 1:23.10 and the 200-yard medley team wrapped things up in 1:32.83.
