Kentucky, Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, Ohio, January 29. THE University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team celebrated senior day Saturday against Kentucky and Virginia Tech at the Keating Aquatics Center.

UC honored its 2011 senior class during pre-meet ceremonies. The women's seniors included Lindsay Bakan, Laurie Caudy, Maggie Eubanks, Kirtley Krombholz, Erin Mullins, Bree Rossi, Melody Smith, and Brittany Teneyck. The men's senior class consists of Stephen Cunningham, Kramer, Brandon Metzler, Britton Van Dissel, Mike Whipkey, and Nathan Williams.

Virginia Tech swept the meet on both sides in a fast meet that saw nine KAC pool records set.

The men's team dropped a 255-42 decision to Virginia Tech and a 206-75 result to Kentucky. The women's team fell 193-106 to Virginia Tech and 176.5-107.5 to Kentucky. Virginia Tech beat Kentucky by a 197-99 margin on the men's side and a 159-135 score on the women's ledger.

Haywood Miller picked up the lone UC victory on the day, swimming 2:09.21 for the top spot in the men's 200-yard breaststroke.

The women's 200-yard medley relay quartet of Liz Hansson, Josefin Wede, Caudy, and Bailey Laban notched a third-place finish with their 1:47.30 effort.

The men's foursome of Metzler, Miller, Roberto Nevarez, and Matt Hays clocked 1:36.31 to grab fifth place in their heat.

Cunningham placed third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 9:42.89.

Hansson swam 57.77 to place second in the women's 100 backstroke, just off the first-place time of 56.95.

Sammie Wheeler was second in the women's 100 breastroke with her time of 1:05.97.

Caudy also added as second-place finish in the women's 200 butterfly with her effort of 2:04.23.

Teneyck had a six-dive total of 311.10 to place second in the women's 1-meter diving event.

Hansson added a third-place finish in the 200 backstroke, clocking 2:04.49 for the heat.

Wede was second in the women's 200 backstroke with her effort of 2:23.31.

Krombholz totaled 290.10 points over six dives for a third-place finish in the women's 3-meter event. She placed just behind Sarah Milton from Virginia Tech who had 290.85 points.

Cincinnati closes out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 5 at Wright State. The meet is slotted for a 10 a.m. start at the WSU Natatorium.
