Kenisha Liu Wins Twice on Opening Night of Roseville Sectionals

In the opening night of the 2016 Speedo Sectionals in Roseville, CA five the night’s six races featured close finishes.

Kenisha Liu of Brea Aquatics stopped the clock in 56.21 to win the women’s 100 freestyle. Davis Arden Racing Team’s Amalie Fackenthal also dipped under 57 with a 56.64. A second back in 57.64 was Marin Pirates’ Cali Raukar.

Liu returned to the top of the podium in the final event of the night. The 17 year old out touched Covina Aquatics’ Catherine Sanchez 2:13.32 to 2:13.36 to win the 200 butterfly. Davis Arden’s Paige Maynard finished third in 2:16.60.

The men’s 100 freestyle title went to Payton Sorenson in 51.48. De Anza Cupertino’s Shayne Fleming posted a 51.94 for second place while Marin Pirates’ Nathaniel Cunnan completed the podium in 52.14.

Halladay Kinsey of Davis Arden was first to the wall in the women’s 200 breaststroke with a 2:33.85. California Gold’s Gianni Pitto earned silver in 2:34.06. Morganne McKennan of Quicksilver wound up third in 2:35.55.

Darren Chan Chin Wah of De Anza Cupertino won the men’s 200 breaststroke with a 2:20.54. Just a half second behind him was Brentwood Seawolves’ Daniel Comforti in 2:21.06. Hollywood’s Steen Medvedev finished third in 2:22.30.

In the final event of the meet, Brea’s Michael Tenney put together the most dominant win of the evening, touching first in the men’s 200 butterfly by two and a half seconds. He posted a 2:03.29. Covina’s Jonathan Olvera was second in 2:05.76 while Marin Pirates’ Kenneth Castro-Abrams finished third in 2:06.27.
