Kaylee McKeown Lowers Australian Age Group Record in 100m Back

SYDNEY – Kaylee McKeown wasn’t content in already owning the 12/13 Years 100m backstroke, she wanted to lower it.

The 13-year-old from Pelican Waters broke her own record set last month when she swam 1:02.23 to take gold. The title adds to her 200m backstroke gold from earlier in the meet. McKeown held off her nearest competitor by over four seconds, with Larah Fedalto taking silver in 1:06.75 ahead of Savannah Van Nieuwburg who took bronze in 1:07.01.

At the end of the session, the awards for the top club and state were awarded, with St Peters Western swim club taking the top gong on 1478 points and Queensland emerging as the strongest state.

Since 2013, The Australian Age Swimming Championships have incorporated the Australian Age Multi Class Championships and this continues to form a valuable part of the event, and provides an additional opportunity for age group athletes to compete at a national level.

In the first session of multi class racing, Timothy Hodge proved why he will be competing at the 2015 IPC World Championships in Glasgow, winning the boys’ 11-15 Years 400m Freestyle (S6-S16).

Hodge who is 14-years, won in 4:39.75 (713 pts) ahead of Samuel Greatorex and Matthew Hearne who took silver and bronze respectively.

Multi class racing continues on Sunday and Monday with finals from 10am and 4pm (AEST).
