PHOENIX, Arizona, July 9. IN December 2006, Katie Hoff broke Tracy Caulkins' 17-18 National Age Group record in the 400-yard individual medley with a 4:02.58. Four months later, Hoff would set her first individual world record in the 400-meter IM, and talk of whether Hoff could surpass Caulkins as the greatest American female swimmer of all time is reaching fever pitch in the month before the Olympics.
As Hoff prepares to make history in her second Olympic Games, take a trip back to 2006 in this 26-minute Swimming World Radio interview, in which Hoff talks about breaking Caulkins' NAG record. The interview appears on page 51 of the July issue of Swimming World Magazine.
Hoff also talks about modeling herself after Caulkins and how Caulkins' achievements in the 1970s and 1980s have inspired Hoff today.
Caulkins joins the interview from her home in Australia, and she gives Hoff advice on improving her IM times. Caulkins also offers up some sets she did as a youngster, including an 8000 IM for time and a set of 400 IMs mixed in with 100s of each stroke.
