Kate Magill, Franco Lupoli Grab Distance Titles at Plantation Sectionals

PLANTATION – Seacoast Swimming Association’s Kate Magill and Azura Florida Aquatic’s Franco Lupoli took home the distance freestyle titles to kick off night one of the Plantation Sectionals at the Plantation Aquatic Complex in Florida.

Magill got the meet off to a fast start with a 17:26.51 in the women’s long course 1500m free, nearly 11 seconds in front of second place finisher Catalina Galea Berraud, who posted a 17:37.23. Emma Whall gave Seacoast a 1-3 finish with her 17:48.42 for third.

Meanwhile, Lupoli got to the wall first in the men’s 800m free by just half a second, out-racing Gator Swim Club’s Alejandro Gomez, 8:18.57 to 8:19.06. Maxwell Miranda of Bluefish Swim Club rounded out the top three with an 8:20.29.

Four relay finals were contested tonight, as swimmers battled for the top three spots in the 200m medley and 200m free relays. In the women’s medley, South Florida Aquatics’ Melissa Marinheiro, Valentina Artemeva, Alia Atkinson and Kathleen Golding got to the wall first in 1:58.17. Swim Fort Lauderdale’s Amanda Tipton, Caitlin Ahern, Elizabeth Zubero and Allison Kopas took second in 2:00.92, while Seacoast’s Kyra Sarazen, Julia Degregorio, Isabel Reis and Sydnee Aubin swam a 2:03.55 to finish third.

In the men’s medley, Mateo Gonzalez, Marco Guarente, Carlos Herrera and Franco Lupoli gave Azura Florida the win in 1:46.63, about a second and a half in front of Blue Dolfins’ Zachary Poti, Benjamin Whitty, Noah Hensley and John Fulginiti (1:48.17). Bluefish Swim Club’s Michael Choate, Joshua Zimmt, Maxwell Miranda and Nicholas Brown touched third in 1:48.70.

South Florida Aquatics swept the women’s sprint relays as Artemeva, Atkinson and Golding teamed with Lisa Blackburn to top the 200 free relay in 1:47.60, more than three seconds ahead of Seacoast’s Reis, Aubin, Sarazen and Emma Whall (1:50.84). Swim Fort Lauderdale took third with Tipton, Zubero, Kopas and Morgan Meadows coming in at 1:51.22.

Azura Florida duplicated the sweep on the men’s side, with the same foursome as the medley – Herrera, Guarente, Gonzalez and Lupoli – taking first in the 200 free relay in 1:36.01. The Blue Dolfins also had the same four participants as the medley relay, and they finished second in 1:38.25. Phoenix Swimming’s Brian Poon, Sebastian Melendez, Steven Baczek and Yunseo Jung claimed third in 1:38.97.

Seacoast leads the combined team standings by four points after day one with 192 points. Azura Florida (188 points) and Phoenix Swimming (183 points) are in second and third.
