FORT COLLINS, Colorado, December 23. THE Chesapeake Elite Pro-Am marked the last major swim meet of 2008, and a couple of U.S. Masters swimmers took full advantage of their final opportunity. Kona's Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen and Texas' David Guthrie turned in a handful of solid swims over the course of the four-day meet, giving their younger competitors all they could handle.

Karlyn began her meet with a 10th-place finish in the women's 200 free. Her time of 1:54.22 was just off her 45-49 USMS record (1:53.28), which she set about a year ago. In the 400 IM, Karlyn would not be denied, however; she time-trialed the event, finishing in 4:34.65, well under her USMS record of 4:38.27 from 2007.

More record-besting times were soon to follow, as Karlyn then dipped under her record in the 50 back (27.25), under her previous time of 28.00. In the 100 back, Karlyn broke her record of 59.77 twice, with a 58.52 in prelims and a 58.29 in finals, where she took 12th.

Karlyn's highest finish of the meet came in the 200 IM, where she garnered fourth place in a time of 2:07.50, again just off her own record of 2:07.25.

Unfortunately, a disqualification in finals of the 100 free prevented Karlyn from chasing down her record of 52.23, which she just missed in prelims with a 52.95.

David Guthrie, 48, flexed his muscles in the breaststroke events, bettering a 45-49 USMS record in the 200 while just falling short in the 100.

He took the 200 out in a swift 1:01.54 to grab fifth place in 2:09.35, more than a second under the previous record of 2:10.64, set by Glenn Mills earlier this year.

In the 100, David touched .09 outside of Jon Blank's 2006 record of 59.19, taking 10th in 59.28. He also finished 76th in the 100 free in 51.23.
