USA’s Courtney Harnish overhauled Australia’s Tamsin Cook down the final 100 meters to win the middle distance event, 4:09.36 to 4:10.91.  Cook initially looked to have no peer tonight in the event, but Harnish went to her legs at the 300 and blasted a 31.04 and 30.00 set of splits to win the gold. That’s a massive personal best for Harnish, blasting her 4:12.20 from U.S. Nationals.

Canada’s Alexandra Aitchison rounded out the medal-winners with a third-place time of 4:11.16, while Japan’s Chinatsu Sato took fourth in 4:12.90.

USA’s Madison Homovich (4:14.42), Australia’s Sacha Downing (4:16.12), Canada’s Sophia Saroukian (4:18.41) and Japan’s Miho Nakayama (4:23.45) also competed in the finale.

USA’s Sierra Schmidt, after her customary dancing exhibition behind the blocks before the start of the night of swimming, put up a 4:12.50 to win the B final.  That proved to be nearly a four-second victory as Australia’s Moesha Johnson (4:16.24) and Canada’s Danica Ludlow (4:18.09) took second and third.

New Zealand’s Grace Sommerville (4:20.26), Japan’s Rika Nara (4:20.47), Mexico’s Monika Gonzalez (4:20.93), China’s Wang Siqi (4:22.23) and Mexico’s Elizabeth Barba (4:29.71) also competed in the consolation heat.

USA’s Liam Egan turned on the afterburners down the final 100 meters to explode past the rest of the field to a 3:52.59 for the win.  He was actually faster this morning with a 3:52.35, but did what he had to do to win tonight with the fastest time of the evening.

USA’s Aidan Burns finished second in 3:53.10, slower than his 3:52.51 from this morning, while Australia’s Joshua Parrish raced his way to third in 3:53.85.

Canada’s Peter Brothers (3:55.00), Japan’s Fuyu Yoshida (3:55.71), China’s Li Yongwei (3:56.11), Australia’s Jacob Hansford (3:57.25) and Canada’s Tristan Cote (3:59.49) put up the other times in the finale.

USA’s Townley Haas, the favorite in the event, missed the A final due to the two-per-country rule for the second night in a row.  After posting the top 100 free time last night in 49.55 out of the B final, Haas whipped up a 3:52.67 this evening to win the B final in the 400.

Australia’s Damian Fyfe took second in 3:57.34 with New Zealand’s Carter Edgecombe taking third in 4:00.74.

Japan’s Shingo Nakaya (4:00.90), Japan’s Atsuya Yoshida (4:01.48), New Zealand’s Dominic Mildon (4:01.69), China’s Cheng Gong (4:01.94) and New Zealand’s Liam Albery (4:02.72) rounded out the consolation heat.

Women’s 100 fly

Japan’s Suzuka Hasegawa gave the meet record a run, but wound up taking the title in 58.91.  That swim fell a bit short of Noemie Thomas’ 58.68 from 2012 for Canada, but was enough to hold off a hard-charging Christina Licciardi of Australia.  Licciardi picked up silver in 59.36, while Japan’s Rikako Ikee (59.50) and USA’s Hannah Kukurugya (59.93) also cleared 1:00.

USA’s Cassidy Bayer (1:00.17), Canada’s Jacomie Strydom (1:00.24), China’s Song Yutong (1:01.14) and Canada’s Lili Margitai (1:01.85) picked up the other finale finishes.

USA’s Kara Kopcso topped the B final with a time of 1:00.34, while Japan’s Haruno Ito touched in second in 1:01.82.  Mexico’s Ana Sofia Revilak finished just behind with a third-place 1:01.92.

Australia’s Megan Gianotti (1:02.14), Australia’s Meg Bailey (1:02.38), Canada’s Danika Huizinga (1:02.39) and Mexico’s Sharo Rodriguez (1:03.41) also competed in the B final.  China’s Zheng Yao drew a disqualification.

USA’s Alex Valente nearly took down the World Junior Record in the finale with a 52.60.  That swim just missed the 52.52 set by Daniel Bell at the 2008 World Junior Championships.  That record is a bit of a farce, however, considering that Bell’s time of 52.37 stands as the Junior Pan Pac record from 2009, and Michael Phelps’ 17-18 U.S. National Age Group mark is a 51.10 from 2003.  But, just having World Junior Record on his resume still would have been nice for Valente.

USA’s Andrew Seliskar took second in 53.14 with New Zealand’s Bradlee Ashby placing third in 53.81.

Japan’s Yuya Yajima (54.01), Canada’s Nicolaas Dekker (54.40), Japan’s Yuya Sakamoto (54.53), Australia’s Dominic Richardson (54.57) and Mexico’s Mateo Gonzalez (54.71) also vied for the meet crown.

USA’s Michael Andrew came up just a bit short of his personal best 53.46 with a 53.66 to win the B final by a wide margin.  China’s Zhang Xi hit the wall second in 55.10 with Canada’s Osvald Nitski placing third in 55.80.

Japan’s Junya Higuchi (56.00), Canada’s Cameron Kidd (56.35), China’s Chen Chaoqi (56.59), Australia’s Joachim Bardrum (56.62) and Mexico’s Hector Rubalcaba (56.80) finished fourth through eighth in the consolation heat.

He wasn’t able to replicate his seed time of 1:57.06 coming into the meet, which would have challenge Jack Conger’s meet record of 1:57.20, but USA’s Connor Green still looked comfortable with a 1:59.60 to win the title tonight.  He actually went faster this morning with a 1:59.19, leading to dreams of a meet record and potentially a World Junior Record (1:56.94 by China’s Li Guangyuan), but Green focused on the win.

USA’s Corey Okubo touched second in 2:01.17 with Canada’s Markus Thormeyer earning third in 2:01.55.

Canada’s Anders Klein (2:02.45), Australia’s Peter Mills (2:02.92), Mexico’s Andy Song An (2:04.37), New Zealand’s Andrew Trembath (2:07.09) and Japan’s Juran Mizohata (2:07.26) pocketed the other times in the finale.

USA’s Curtis Ogren crushed the B final with a time of 2:02.43, while Canada’s Peter Brothers took a distant second in 2:06.00.  USA’s Brendan Casey placed third in 2:06.12.

China’s Wang Zhou (2:07.27), Canada’s Tim Zeng (2:07.70), Mexico’s Danielito Perez (2:13.03), USA’s Ethan Young (2:13.23) and Fiji’s Kalen Eyre (2:40.53) finished fourth through eighth in the consolation.

The Australians powered their way past the Americans down the stretch to win the 400 free relay in a meet record time of 3:39.73.  That swim smashed the previous mark of 3:40.97 set by Team USA in 2010, but will not beat the World Junior Record of 3:41.40 set by Russia at the World Junior Championships last summer since Sophie Taylor is listed as born in 1996.  Girls, to be considered for World Junior Records this year, must be born in 1997 and earlier.

The U.S., however, with a second-place 3:40.14 had a team made up completely of those listed as born in 1997 and 1998 and are eligible to break the WJR set by the Russian squad last summer.

Russia’s Splits:

Mariia Baklakova – 55.05
Rozaliya Nasretdinova – 55.35
Valeriia Kolotushkina – 55.45
Daria S. Ustinova – 55.55

Japan (3:45.53), Canada (3:45.79), China (3:46.54), Mexico (3:53.27) and Fiji (4:18.20) also had team-scoring times.
