A pair of swimmers cleared 2:00 this morning to lead the way as Australia’s Shayna Jack (1:59.63) and USA’s Katie Drabot (1:59.93) raised the banner of their respective countries to the top of the A final this evening.

USA’s Courtney Harnish finished third in 2:00.46 to also make the championship finale, while USA’s Stanzi Moseley was relegated to the B final with a fourth-place 2:00.92 due to the two-per-country rule.

Australia’s Chelsea Gillett (5th, 2:01.11), Canada’s Alexandra Aitchison (7th, 2:01.50), Japan’s Sachi Mochida (8th, 2:01.58), Japan’s Hiroko Makino (10th, 2:02.25) and Canada’s Alexandra Buscher (11th, 2:02.26) also made the championship heat as several Americans and Australians were bumped out of the top eight due to parity rules.

USA’s Townley Haas, who won four junior national titles earlier this month in Irvine, started off Junior Pan Pacs right with a sizzling 1:48.51. That’s just off Clay Youngquist’s meet record of 1:48.44 from 2010, and puts Haas firmly in place as the favorite tonight.

Japan’s Katsuhiro Matsumoto finished second in 1:49.93, while USA’s Blake Pieroni took third in 1:50.39.  The two-per-country rule started taking an effect by fourth with USA’s Aidan Burns being punted to the B final with a fourth-place 1:50.82.

China’s Li Yongwei (5th, 1:50.90), Australia’s Samuel Young (8th, 1:51.66), Japan’s Fuyu Yoshida (9th, 1:51.67), Australia’s Damian Fyfe (10th, 1:51.72) and Canada’s Peter Brothers (13th, 1:52.41) also made the finale.

In his first international, 15-year-old professional Michael Andrew of the U.S. turned in a sterling time of 55.80 to top qualifying in the backstroke event.  That’s just off his seed time of 55.73, as Andrew should drop that time this evening.

USA’s Connor Green raced his way to second in the event with a 56.05, while Canada’s Markus Thormeyer (56.37) and New Zealand’s Andrew Trembath (56.54) will bracket the Americans in this evening’s final.

Canada’s Anders Klein (57.08), Mexico’s Andy Xianyang (57.16), Australia’s Peter Mills (57.51) and Mexico’s Mateo Gonzalez Medina (12th, 58.71) will also vie for the junior title tonight.  A few Canadians and Americans were bumped out of the A final due to the two-per-country rule.

USA’s Hannah Kukurugya made a run at the meet record, but eased in with a 2:10.04 to settle for the top seed tonight.  That swim came up half-a-second shy of Natsuki Akiyama’s 2007 record of 2:09.48.

Japan’s Haruno Ito finished second this morning in 2:10.47, just a second off the record, while USA’s Cassidy Bayer turned in a third-place 2:12.30.

Japan’s Suzuka Hasegawa, the first heat winner with a 2:12.40, took fourth overall, while USA’s Kara Kopcso (2:13.17) and Ella Eastin (2:13.32) placed fifth and sixth but will miss the top eight due to the two-per-country rule.

Australia’s Christina Licciardi (7th, 2:13.66), Canada’s Jacomie Strydom (9th, 2:14.27), Australia’s Megan Gianotti (10th, 2:15.71) and New Zealand’s Grace Sommerville (11th, 2:17.68) also earned their way into the A final.

The first meet record of the competition fell as USA’s Andrew Seliskar cruised through his 200 fly heat like he was taking a bath.  He clocked a 1:56.65 this morning, smashing the 1:57.40 set by Kenta Hirai back in 2012.  There’s little doubt that Seliskar has the World Junior Record in his sites.  Tamas Kenderesi owns that record with a 1:55.95 at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China last week.  Seliskar’s time this morning would have placed fifth at the Senior Pan Pacs just last week in this event.

Japan’s Yuya Yajima placed second in 1:58.23 with USA’s Corey Okubo taking third overall in 1:59.42 as the only other sub-2:00 swimmer.

Australia’s Jacob Hansford (2:00.23) and Joachim Bardrum (2:01.72) also made the championship heat.

New Zealand’s Bradlee Ashby (7th, 2:02.09), Canada’s Osvald Nitski (8th, 2:02.14) and Japan’s Junya Higuchi (9th, 2:02.33) also will swim in the A final after Australia’s Dominic Richardson was relegated due to the two-per-country rule.
