Joyce Wins Fourth Straight 50 Free Title at NCAAs

By Jason Marsteller

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, March 8. IN a blazing fast heat, Georgia's Kara Lynn Joyce joined Texas' Leigh Ann Fetter (1988-91) as the only two 50 free swimmers to pick up four consecutive wins in the event.

Joyce clocked a 21.71 to hold off a pair of Arizona Wildcats to win the event. Lara Jackson (21.73) and Lacey Nymeyer (21.80) closed out the rest of the top three.

The win also put Joyce at 17 total NCAA titles, putting her just two shy of the record of 19 held by Stanford's Jenny Thompson.

Arizona took the lead after the event with 134 points, while Auburn sat second with 127 points. Stanford (71.5), Georgia (68) and Texas A&M (58.5) comprised the rest of the top five.
