Jowan Qupty Added to Israeli Roster for European Swimming Championships

JERUSALEM, Israel, May 10. THE Higher Court of the Israeli Swimming Federation has decided to place Jowan Qupty on the Israeli team for the European Swimming Championships, over the objections of federation officials including head coach Leonid Kaufman.

The district judge notified the Israeli Swimming Federation that Qupty, the first Arab Israeli Swimming Champion in the 200 breast, will be placed on the European Swimming Championship roster in the 100 breast. Qupty had the top time in the 100-meter breast of any Israeli, but was initially excluded from the roster of athletes to compete in Hungary starting May 21.

The Rabati Jerusalem Swimming Club, on behalf of Qupty, appealed the initial exclusion with evidence that his top time in the 100-meter breast was better than those of the rest of the Israeli roster. The district judge today elected to side with the Rabati club in her decision.

Infighting, including discrimination against Qupty and the Rabati club, had been alleged as the reasoning behind his initial exclusion.
