Singapore’s Joseph Schooling earned his fifth and sixth gold medals of the meet with an individual and relay victory tonight at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games.

Schooling set a Games record in the men’s 100-meter butterfly in a time of 52.13, downing his 2013 mark of 52.67.  Indonesia’s Glenn Sutanto (52.90) and Triady Sidiq (53.98) rounded out the podium.

Schooling collected another gold as Singapore’s Schooling (49.74), Kai Quan Yeo (50.56), Clement Lim (49.81) and Zheng Wen Quah (49.48) won the men’s 400-meter free relay in 3:19.59.  That swim dropped the Games record of 3:21.74 set by Singapore in 2013.  It also lowered the Singapore record of 3:20.98 set at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

In her attempt to become Vietnam’s version of the Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu, Vien Nguyen doubled up with a pair of victories tonight en route to her sixth gold medal and eighth medal of any kind as she’s slated to swim every event.

Nguyen won the women’s 200-meter free in 1:59.27, downing Ting Wen Quah‘s Games record of 2:00.57 from 2009.  Thailand’s Natthanan Junkrajang (2:00.54) and Philippines’ Jasmine Alkhadi (2:00.84) wound up second and third.

That swim crushed Nguyen’s Vietnamese record of 2:01.80 set on the Mesa stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series.

Nguyen also won the women’s 200-meter fly in 2:11.12. That time smashed the Games record of 2:13.49 set by Tao Li in 2009.  It also blasted Nguyen’s Vietnamese record of 2:12.46 set at the 2014 Southeast Asian Games.

Quah placed second in 2:14.50 with Thailand’s Sutasinee Pankaew taking third in 2:14.51.

Singapore’s Zheng Wen Quah topped the men’s 400-meter IM with a time of 4:23.50. That swim just missed the Games record of 4:23.20 set by Ratapong Sirisanont of Thailand from 2003.

Singapore’s Sheng Jun Pang took second tonight in 4:24.81, while Vietnam’s Duy Khoi Tran placed third in 4:26.29.

Tao topped the women’s 100-meter back in 1:02.67, while Indonesia’s Anak Ratih placed second in 1:04.38.  Philippines’ Roxanne Yu touched third in 1:04.80.

Typo in the 3rd last paragraph I believe?

“Singapore’s Zheng Wen Quah topped the men’s 400-meter IM with a time of 5:23.50. That swim just missed the Games record of 4:23.20 set by Ratapong Sirisanont of Thailand from 2003.”

The former timing should be 4:23.50 rather than 5:23.50

Not to diminish Schooling’s great accomplishments ( and he certainly proved himself @ NCAAs) but he’s not exactly going up against thevGOAT or even the 100-200 fly defending World Champ, here.

And he’s competing literally in his own backyard.

If he can win @ Kazan or even medal then he’ll have moved into the big leagues. Dito for his distaff Vietnamese counterpart but she faces much stiffer odds just to final, let alone medal.

But then nobody thought Mrs. Mark Stockwell had any chance against the vaunted GDR’s Wundermadchen in West Berlin a few moons ago we ALL know how THATbturned out.

Right, TC?

I’ve been watching Schooling for several years now and he’s always impressed me with his technique and ambition- he was actually disappointed with his times at NC2As. I think he’ll medal in Kazan and when I saw him and Conger battling it out side-by-side at NC2As, I had a vision of them doing the same in adjacent lanes in London next year, duking it out again, both of them in the hunt for medals.
