Jose Finkel Trophy Meet: Cesar Cielo Sets South American Record in 100 Free Semis

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, September 24. DURING semis of the men's 100 free, Brazil's Cesar Cielo smashed the South American record in short course competition at the Jose Finkel Trophy Meet.

Cielo clocked a scorching time of 46.13, smashing Nicolas Oliveira's South American record of 46.30 set in 2009, as well as improving upon Cielo's previous top-ranked time of 46.62. Cielo moved up to 15th in the all-time rankings in the event.

Kaio Almeida captured the men's 200 fly crown in 1:52.12, moving to second in the early world rankings. Frederico Castro touched second in 1:54.03, while Leonardo De Deus picked up third-place honors in 1:54.23.

Henrique Rodrigues won the men's 100 IM in 53.05, moving to third in the early world rankings. Markus Rogan placed second in 53.29, while Fernando Silva wound up third in 54.55.

Evelyn Verraszto touched out Fabiola Molina, 1:01.38 to 1:01.63, in the women's 100 IM finale. Michelle Lenhardt took third in the sprint medley with a 1:02.76.

Zsuzsanna Jakabos topped the women's 200 fly finale in 2:08.85, while Kim Vandenberg placed second in 2:09.15. Georgina Bardach claimed third in 2:11.76.

In qualifying rounds, Jessica Hardy paced semis of the women's 100 free with a 53.89, while also leading the way in the women's 50 breast with a 30.39 to move to third in the early world rankings. Felipe Silva improved upon his top-ranked time in the men's 50 breast with a 26.35. His previous best had been a 26.56 at the World Cup stop in Rio earlier this month.
