Johns Hopkins vs. Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, October 24. MARYLAND swimming and diving started its season on the right foot defeating Johns Hopkins on Friday afternoon at the Eppley Center Natatorium.

The women, who defeated the Blue Jays, 185-95, kicked off the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay (1:37.81). The Terps went 1, 2, 3 in the 200 free as Laura Wright, who is back for the Red and Black after an injury sidelined her a year ago, took first with freshmen Ginny Glover and Lia Reich finishing second and third, respectively.

Maryland's youth shined in the backstroke, as sophomore Annie Fittin won the 100 and Glover took first in the 200. Freshman Alexa Hamilton had a great start to her young career as well, winning both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Another freshman, Martha VanLieshout, captured both distance events, winning the 500 and 1000 freestyle. Fellow classmate Alisa Kurbatova won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events.

Veterans had a fine day in Maryland's opener as well, as senior Yelena Skalinskaya won both the 50 and 100 free and junior Patty DeScenza took first in the 200 fly.

The men coasted to a 167-105 win and started out as the women did, capturing the 200 medley relay. The men raked up the distance events, taking the top three slots in both the 500 and 1000 free, led by first-place finishes by Chris Rouchard. The Terps repeated that feat in the 50 free and 200 fly with John Closs winning the free and freshman Sean Stewart placing first in the fly. Senior Eric Cullen picked up a pair of first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 breast.

The win marked the first with the Terrapins for head coach Sean Schimmel, who is in his first season at Maryland.

"I am really happy with how both the men and women did today and how we prepared ourselves, got up there, and performed," Schimmel said. "We put up a couple good times on the board and I think we put ourselves in a good position to handle a big challenge with Duke and NC State next weekend."

Maryland will celebrate homecoming at the Alumni Meet tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at Eppley Center Natatorium before heading to Raleigh, N.C. next weekend for ACC action against Duke and NC State.

Special thanks to Maryland for contributing this report.
