Jessica Hardy is one of the few swimmers who thrives on the pressure of a big swim, and she said that the stress of her 100 breast prelim swim at the FINA world championships helped her post a strong swim.

“I’m more of an excited type of swimmer, so the more pressure there is, the more … excited I get,” she said.

Hardy swam in the prelim heat next to Russia’s Yuliya Efimova, who is Hardy’s training partner at the Trojan Swim Club in Los Angeles. Though the partisan crowd was cheering for Efimova through the swim, Hardy said she was able to channel that energy for herself.

She also said she has learned to suppress the nervous energy of the first swim of the meet and build on it through the meet. She’ll face Efimova, defending world champion Ruta Meilutyte and others in tonight’s semifinal.
