Navy Press Release

Virginia’s strong start helped boost the Cavaliers to a 183-117 victory over the Navy men’s swimming and diving team, Friday afternoon at the Aquatics and Fitness Center in Charlottesville, Va.
“Overall, we would have liked to have been a little quicker today,” said Navy men’s swimming head coach Bill Roberts. “Our guys certainly were ready, but Virginia was a little stronger than us.”

The Cavaliers (1-0) placed first, second and third in four of the first six events of the meet to give them an early cushion over the Midshipmen (2-2). That included Virginia taking the top-three spots in the initial two events of the day, the one and three-meter diving contests. Navy would begin the swimming portion of the meet by winning the 200y medley relay, but Virginia went 1-2-3 in the first individual event of the meet, the 1000y freestyle race.

Tom Duvall (Jr., Durham, N.H.) responded for the Mids by posting a time of 1:39.09 to win the 200y freestyle race by 1.31 seconds, but the Cavaliers answered right back by claiming the top-three finishers in the 100y backstroke and then winning the 100y breaststroke.

Jonathan DeBaugh (Jr., Conroe, Texas) would win a pair of events on the day for Navy, narrowly defeating Virginia’s John Denning in each race. Debaugh first touched the wall in a time of 1:49.42 to edge Denning by three-tenths of a second in the 200y fly, then later posted a time of 50.13 to win by six-tenths of a second in the 100y fly.

“Jonathan really stood out for us,” said Roberts. “He was real strong across the board.”

Duvall also would pick up a second event win in the meet as he claimed the 500y freestyle race with a time of 4:33.39. He would get to the wall just 13-hundredths of a second ahead of Virginia’s Rodney Fentress to earn his second victory of the day. The final individual event of the afternoon saw Navy’s Young Tae Seo (Fr., Los Angeles, Calif.) record a time of 1:52.29 to win the 200y individual medley race by 15-hundredths of a second.

“Tom had another solid meet,” said Roberts, “and Young Tae was really good, especially in the IM.”

Navy will next be in action Nov. 8 when it, along with the Navy women’s squad, competes in Lewisburg, Pa., against American, Lafayette and Bucknell.
