Jayhawks Sign Eight For 2004 Freshman Class

LAWRENCE, Kan, December 5. UNIVERSITY of Kansas Swimming and Diving team had eight swimmers sign National Letters of Intent for their 2004 freshman class. Lauren Bonfe (Canisteo, N.Y.), Lindsey Herre (Bonner Springs, Kan.), Anne Liggett (Portland, Ore.), Nikki Maples (St. Charles, Ill.), Beth Roach (Elkhorn, Neb.), Allie Rubino (Naperville, Kan.), Terri Schramka (Madison, Wis.) and Sierra Slavin (Shawnee, Kan.) will join the team next fall.

Bonfe currently attends Alfred-Almond High School where she swims the 100 butterfly, the 100 backstroke and the 100 freestyle. She is a ten time medalist at the Empire State Games, a high school All-American, a Section 5 record holder in back and fly, YMCA state record holder in the 100 fly and a senior national qualifier in the 100 fly and 100 back. Bonfe is also a member of the National Honor Society, High Honor Roll and the Scholar Athlete Team.

Herre is a senior at St. Thomas Aquinas High School where she was the 2002 Kansas state high school champion in the 200 and 500 freestyle, Sun Newspaper Swimmer of the year in 2002, voted her high school's most valuable swimmer two years in a row, and a member of the All-State and All-Metro teams. She also swam on three relay teams at 2003 Spring nationals and was a member on two relays that placed eighth at the 2002 Spring Nationals. Herre was on the USA Swimming 2001-02 Scholastic All-American team and on the honor roll 4-of-5 semesters.

Liggett attends Westview High School where she is in the National top 16, top 5 in Oregon, a national age group record holder on relays, a junior national qualifier in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 1650 free, 100 fly, 200 fly and 400 IM. She was also a Senior National qualifier in the 100 free, Oregon state high school champion in the 50 Free and a high school All-American. Liggett is also on the Honor Roll. Maples, who is in her senior year at St. Charles North High School, was a state finalist in the 100 breast three years in a row, a member of All-American relays the last two years, voted her team's most valuable swimmer, a junior national qualifier in the 100 breast, 200 breast, 100 free, 200 IM and 400 IM.

Maples is a multiple high school state qualifier, along with being a P.E. Leader. Roach currently attends Marian High School and was the 2000 midwestern LSC swimmer of the year, a junior national qualifier in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 100 fly and 100 back. She has won multiple Nebraska state high school championships and is a record holder in the 100 and 200 Free. Roach has also earned high school All-American first honors.

Rubino, a senior at Rosary High School, was an All-American her sophomore and junior years, All-State as a sophomore and junior, and a junior national qualifier in the 100 back.

Schramka attends Edgewood High School was the most valuable swimmer in 2001 and 2002, an All-American in the 100 back, was a Consideration 200 free State qualifier in the WIAA, won the 100 back in 2001 and 2002, 200 free in 2002 and the 500 free in 2001. She was a junior national qualifier in the 100 back, 200 back, 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free and a senior national qualifier in the 100 back, 200 back, 100 free and 200 free. Schramka was also on the high honors list all semesters.

Slavin, a senior at Shawnee Mission Northwest, earned high points her freshman, sophomore and junior years, was a sectional qualifier in the 200 IM and 100 fly and a high school state finalist. Slavin is a member of the National Honor Society, on the Honor Roll and was sophomore Top 100. "All of these eight swimmers will have an immediate impact on our program," head coach Clark Campbell said. "We are thrilled that they all choose KU. Each swimmer will help make us a top-25 program. As a staff we are excited to develop these swimmers into the best possible student-athletes they can be."
