Japan Collegiate Championships: Pair of Japanese National Records Fall

TOKYO, Japan, September 11. OVER the weekend, Japan held the Japan Collegiate Championships in Tokyo, Japan from Sept. 7-9. During the meet, a pair of Japanese national records fell by the wayside in the men's 100 free and the women's 200 breast.

Hisayoshi Sato became the first sub-49-second man in Japan with a time of 48.91, which not only set the Japan national record but also eclipsed the Asian standard in the men's 100 free. Sato also won the 200 free in 1:48.77.

Meanwhile, Megumi Taneda broke the women's 200 breaststroke national mark with a time of 2:23.85, while also finishing second behind Nanaka Tamura in the 100 breast, 1:07.61 to 1:08.61. Tamura's time stands as a meet record.

For the women, Eri Tabei and Yurie Yano claimed a pair of titles. Tabei swept the backstroke events with a 1:02.41 in the 100 and a 2:14.59 in the 200. Yano, on the other hand, posted a pair of meet records in the disparate events of the 800 free (8:31.57) and 200 fly (2:09.61).

Other meet records came from Makoto Ito in the men's 50 free (22.86), Ryoji Sononaka in the men's 1500 free (15:20.29), Takuro Fujii in the men's 200 IM (1:59.92) and Yuka Kato in the women's 100 fly (58.86).

The remaining individual titles came from Shogo Hihara in the men's 400 free (3:53.83), Junya Koga in the men's 100 back (55.69), Kazuki Watanabe in the men's 200 back (1:59.72), Yuta Suenaga in the men's 100 breast (1:01.30), Kazuki Otsuka in the men's 200 breast (2:12.61), Takashi Tomiyama in the men's 100 fly (53.29), Ryusuke Sakata in the men's 200 fly (1:57.13), Sho Uchida in the men's 400 IM (4:21.87), Fuyumi Ueta in the women's 50 free (25.97), Yu Iwasaki in the women's 100 free (56.59), Norie Urabe in the women's 200 free (2:01.81), Chika Yonenaga in the women's 400 free (4:16.56), Asami Kitagawa in the women's 200 IM (2:14.75) and Naoko Sakai in the women's 400 IM (4:47.72).
