Jack Saunderson Crushes 100 Fly Record on Day Three of CAA Championships

A total of three records fell on the third day of the 2018 Colonial Athletic Association men’s and women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.

Heading into the final day of competition, the William and Mary men (619) have a comfortable lead over Drexel (518). James Madison (418) has a narrow lead over William and Mary (407) on the women’s side.

Women’s 400 IM

William and Mary’s Morgan Smith knocked off another two seconds from her morning swim to win the CAA 400 IM crown this evening. The junior posted a time of 4:19.88 for the win.

James Madison took the next two spots: Abby Ortman finished in 4:22.93 while teammate Katie Parker finished in 4:23.28.

William and Mary’s Julia Bland (4:23.42), Towson’s Kendall Krumenacker (4:24.00), UNCW’s Kyra Schemmel (4:25.69), Towson’s Karlee Carminati (4:26.71) and Drexel’s April Forsthoffer (4:28.27) rounded out the top eight.

Men’s 400 IM

William and Mary had five swimmers in the top heat and Ben Skopic cruised to victory, winning the event in 3:50.17. The William and Mary sophomore stopped the clock in 3:50.17.

Towson’s Colin Roddy swam to second in 3:53.04 and William and Mary’s Ian Bidwell was third in 3:54.20.

William and Mary’s Conrad Zamparello (3:54.21), William and Mary’s Chris Balbo (3:54.46), Delaware’s Patrick Savidge (3:57.21), Drexel’s Jon Pat Ransom (3:58.57) and William and Mary’s Brett Barden (4:01.62) also competed in the A-final.

Women’s 100 Fly

Northeastern’s Sara Touchette-McGowan led the way of three women under the 55-second barrier, winning the event in 54.30. The senior’s time met the NCAA B standard.

William and Mary’s Abby Mack finished second in 54.83 and UNCW’s Viv Louviere took a close third in 54.95.

Delaware’s Tessa Hayman (55.23), William and Mary’s Maria Oceguera (55.59), Towson’s Megan Cowan (55.75), Drexel’s Charlotte Myers (55.86) and Drexel’s Hollie Hopf (56.86) were also in the top eight.

Men’s 100 Fly

Jack Saunderson dominated the men’s 100 fly, winning the event by 2.5 seconds. The Towson junior touched the wall in a quick 45.75, crushing his own CAA meet and all-time record of 47.01 set at this meet last year. His swim was only 0.26 off the NCAA A standard.

William and Mary’s Jack Doherty finished second in 48.17 while his teammate Ian Thompson took third in 48.35.

William and Mary’s Tommy Kealy (48.55), UNCW’s Connor Forsythe (48.75), Drexel’s Joe Short (49.03), William and Mary’s Joey Rento (49.34) and Drexel’s Spencer Hill (50.02) rounded out the final heat.

Women’s 200 Free

Northeastern’s Megan Clark won her second individual CAA title of the weekend, winning the event in 1:47.20. The sophomore took it out fast but was able to hold on for the win.

James Madison’s Bonnie Zhang finished in 1:47.90 for second place while her teammate Quinn MacMillan posted a 1:48.46 for third.

James Madison’s Kristie Darmody (1:49.87), Drexel’s Tanja Kirmse (1:50.00), William and Mary’s Megan Bull (1:50.19), Towson’s Annemarie Schnoor (1:51.34) and James Madison’s Julianna Jones (1:51.48) completed the A-final.

 

 Men’s 200 Free

In a close race for the CAA men’s 200 free win, Drexel’s Stithies Malamas edged out the runner-up for the title. The sophomore won the event in 1:37.55, fast enough for an NCAA B standard.

William and Mary’s Colin Wright took a close second in 1:37.80 and Drexel’s Patrick Cobb finished third in 1:38.52.

William and Mary’s Eric Grimes (1:38.55), UNCW’s Jack Cosgrove (1:38.73), William and Mary’s Kyle Neri (1:38.92), Drexel’s Luke Hanner (1:39.85) and William and Mary’s Christopher Pfuhl (1:39.94) rounded out the top eight.

Women’s 100 Breast

In one of the closest races of the evening, Towson’s Jaclyn Schoening got her hands to the wall first for the win. The sophomore posted a final time of 1:01.67 with less than three tenths between first and third.

Drexel’s Gab Rudy finished a close second in 1:01.78 and Northeastern’s Klara Juliusson wasn’t too behind in 1:01.96 for third.

UNCW’s Meagan Johnson (1:02.07), James Madison’s Megan Marsh (1:02.72), Towson’s Amanda Rosa (1:03.27), William and Mary’s Jasmine Harper (1:04.65) and Northeastern’s Matilda Weiler (1:03.35) completed the fastest heat.

Men’s 100 Breast

Drexel took the top two spots in the men’s 100 breast with only .03 separating the two teammates. Ralph Cannarozzi III ultimately got his hands to the wall first in a time of 54.86.

His teammate Joseph Brown was right behind him, taking second in 54.89. UNCW’s Gianmichel D’Alessandro was third in 55.11.

UNCW’s Ben Whitty (55.37), William and Mary’s Devin McNulty (55.53), William and Mary’s Brooks Peterson (56.07), Delaware’s Brandon Evers (57.16) and Drexel’s Harrison Schultz (56.28) were also in the top eight.

Women’s 100 Back

Alex Kutch dominated the women’s 100 back, winning the event by over two full seconds. The Drexel sophomore won the gold in 52.99. Kutch broke her own CAA meet and all-time record this morning during prelims in 52.95.

Drexel’s Alicia Diaz won the silver in 55.13 and William and Mary’s Katie Sell won bronze in 55.23.

James Madison’s Abby Ortman (55.55), Towson’s Haley Sutton (55.58), Northeastern’s Sidney Smith (55.89), Towson’s Jacy Icard (56.09) and Northeastern’s Christine Leong (56.24) rounded out the top heat.

Drexel’s Jason Arthur won the final individual race of the evening in yet another close finish. The sophomore got his hand to the wall in 48.10 for the win.

William and Mary’s Colin Demers was second in 48.24 and his teammate Jake Kealy was third in 49.15.

William and Mary’s Lee Bradley (49.33), Towson’s Erek Nelson (49.50), William and Mary’s Wyatt Grubb (49.54), Delaware’s Asher Kiely (50.12) and Towson’s Zach Bishop (50.35) also swam in the A-final.

Men’s 3-meter Diving

Drexel’s Anthony Musciano won his second diving title of these CAA Championships, this time on the 3-meter board. The sophomore posted a final score of 306.75 for gold.

UNCW’s Seth O’Dea dove to silver with 299.40 points while Towson’s Will Canny earned bronze with a score of 290.35.

Delaware’s Jacob Lukens (276.20), Drexel’s Simon Carne (263.20), UNCW’s Trent Igoe (261.95), Towson’s John Casey (241.40) and Drexel’s Joel Keefer (235.55) also dove in the top eight.

Women’s 400 Medley Relay

Northeastern’s Christine Leong (56.21), Klara Juliusson (1:01.71), Sara Touchette-McGowan (51.66) and Megan Clark (50.68) swam their way to gold in a time of 3:40.26. This is the second relay the Huskies have won this meet.

Drexel finished second in 3:42.35 and Towson was a close third in 3:42.39.

Men’s 400 Medley Relay

The top two finishers were both under the CAA meet and all-time record, but William and Mary got their hand to the wall first for the title. Colin Demers (48.36), Devin McNulty (53.33), Jack Doherty (48.10) and Colin Wright (43.50) are the new record-holders in 3:13.29. They eclipsed their own record set back in 2015.

Towson was also under the previous record with their 3:13.56 for second. Drexel was third in 3:14.72.
