Princeton Holds Firm on Points Advantage After Prelims at Ivy League

PRINCETON – Princeton, which put up a big team points advantage last night, did nothing to change that this morning at the Ivy League Championships with 18 point scorers tonight.  Columbia had a big day with 18 point scorers as well.

400 IM

Princeton, already owning a huge point advantage from night two, continued piling on the points with a 1-2 effort this morning in the 400 IM.

Samuel Smiddy (3:45.85) and Corey Okubo (3:45.88) went a closely-contested 1-2, as both crushed the pool record of 3:47.33 set by teammate Teo D’Alessandro in 2013.

The conference record of 3:44.39 set by Dartmouth’s Nejc Zupan is likely to be rewritten this evening.

100 fly

Columbia’s David Jakl topped qualifying with a 46.27 this morning, dropping more than a second from his seed time.  Harvard’s Max Yakubovich touched second with a 47.13, while Princeton’s Zach Buerger claimed third in 47.38.

Princeton’s Teo D’Alessandro turned in the top time of the morning with a 1:35.53, while Penn’s Eric Schultz touched second in 1:35.67.  Yale’s Rob Harder rounded out the top three qualifiers in 1:36.03.

100 breast

Cornell freshman Alex Evdokimov put up the top time this morning with a 53.44.

Princeton’s Jack Pohlmann touched second in 53.59 with Penn’s Cole Hurwitz placing third in 53.69.

Princeton’s Michael Strand hit the wall in 46.70 to top qualifying in the event.  That’s not far off Alex Righi’s conference and pool record of 46.32 from 2009.

Columbia’s David Jakl set up a double tonight with a 47.21 for second, while Cornell’s Dylan Sali placed third in 47.24.
