IUPUI Men And Women Sweep Centre (M: 173-121; W: 152-131)

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, October 19. THE IUPUI men's and women's swimming and diving teams made quick work of Centre College, sweeping their dual meet, with the men winning, 173-121, while the women won, 152-131, at the IU Natatorium.

Sophomore Ryan Magner (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger) picked up two wins on the men's side, winning in both the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly. Magner's (above) time in the 200 free, 1:50.36, was tops among IUPUI men's swimmers this season and is within the top 10 of The Summit League.

Junior Jaron Tuttle (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka) met the NCAA provisional marks in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions. Tuttle (right) scored a 315.15 from one meter and a 330.97 off of the three-meter board, besting the 290.00 and 310.00 needed to qualify for provisionals.

Despite moving swimmers to exhibition heats during the meet, the Jaguars had 17 swimmers record season-best times. Among them, freshman Zach Blackwood (LaPorte, Ind./New Prairie) bettered his time in the 100 butterfly, posting a 55.67 to remain in the conference's top 10. Fellow freshman Matt Ray (Ellettsville, Ind./Edgewood) was right behind Blackwood, touching the wall in 55.97.

Another freshman, Billy Pennington (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland) had his best diving performance of the year, scoring 268.65 off of the 1-meter board and 273.90 on the 3-meter board.

While freshman Michael Steurer (Jasper, Ind./Jasper) did not have a new season-best in the 100 backstroke, he still won the event, as well as taking the best time in the 200 IM despite swimming it as an exhibition.

The Jaguars swept the 50 freestyle with sophomores Justin Shaw (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland), Steven Zoss (Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) and Ben Smith (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg), finishing in that order, respectively. For Shaw and Zoss, their times of 22.14 and 22.71 were season-bests, placing them in the top 10 of conference swimmers. Shaw followed up that performance with another win the 100 free, winning in 49.18. Smith was second in 49.79, his best time in the event.

Senior Eric Hollingsworth (Avon, Ind./Avon) won the 200 backstroke, while sophomore Craig Noakes (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) took the 200 breaststroke.

In relays, the Jaguars had the first and third-best times in the closing 400 free relay, with the combination of Zoss, Magner, Shaw and Smith swimming a season-best 3:18.84. In the 400 medley relay, IUPUI finished one-two, with Steurer, Noakes, Magner and Shaw combining to win in 3:43.17. Senior Jake DeLion (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Jefferson) led freshman Brian Nahrwold (Norwell, Ind./Norwell), Blackwood and Zoss to a second-place finish in the event.

On the women's side, 17 swimmers and divers took home season-best performances. Sophomore Liz Scott (Nappanee, Ind./Bremen) had two season-high diving scores, tallying a 227.33 off of the 1-meter board, while scoring a 264.97 on the 3-meter. Fellow diver Julie Jones (Evansville, Ind./Central) had a career-best day while diving, scoring 189.30 and 207.07, respectively.

Freshman Kate Stephens (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) took first in the 100 backstroke, narrowly missing out on reaching the top 15 times in school history for the second time this season, with a time of 1:01.55.

Another freshman, Holly Reed (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) had two career-best performances in the 50 and 100 freestyles, leading IUPUI with a 26.07 in the 50. Reed's (right) time of 56.85 in the 100 placed fourth overall and second among IUPUI swimmers.

Crystal Tate (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) posted three career-bests in the meet, swimming a 56.62 in the 100 free, a 1:03.64 in the 100 back and an exhibition 2:18.83 in the 200 IM, which was the quickest time of the heat.

Sophomore Alex McCreight (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) only had one season-best time, but she made it count, swimming a 2:19.72 in the 200 backstroke to finish first and pick up nine points for the Jaguars. The Newburgh, Ind.-native also won in the 200 butterfly, swimming a 2:15.66.

Another first-place finisher was freshman Katy Todd (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove), who swam a 2:33.28 to place first in 200 breaststroke. Todd (below) also had a career-best in the 200 butterfly, swimming a 2:16.32 in placing second.

Among the winners for the Jaguars was freshman Carrie Ford (Charleston, S.C./Bishop England), who swam a 5:26.02 in the 500 freestyle, and sophomore Sara Scott (Vincennes, Ind./Lincoln) took the 100 butterfly after swimming a 1:01.39.

The Jaguars, while not scoring any points in the final relay of the night, had the best time in the 400 freestyle relay, with junior Victoria Wheeler (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point), sophomore Emily Moore (LaPorte, Ind./New Prairie), Reed and Todd combining to post a 3:46.59, which bested Centre's 3:46.85. In the 400 medley relay, the Jaguars went one-two, with Stephens, Todd, McCreight and Reed finishing first in 4:09.87. Tate, Moore, Smith and Wheeler were close behind, coming in second with a time of 4:09.98.
