IUPUI Drops Duals To St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo, December 21. THE IUPUI men's swim team visited the University of St. Louis in their final dual meet before the holiday season and came away with a 138-106 loss.

The Jaguars built an early lead with wins in the first three events. Bryce Cox (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble/University College) continues his spectacular diving season. The senior easily won both diving events. Cox has now won seven of the last eight diving events that he's entered. In the opening one-meter event, he broke his own school record by 8.13 points. His score of 335.33 was 49.05 points better than the second place finisher. He also picked easily won the three-meter event with a score of 324.00. That was the second-highest score in the event in school history and was 43.65 points better than second.

The 200 medley relay team of seniors A.J. Parks (Bremen, Ind./Bremen/School of Technology) and Grant Anderson (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike/School of Physical Education & Tourism Management), sophomore Rob Trame (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee/University College) and freshman Chris Hutchison (Indianapolis, Ind./Decatur Central/School of Engineering) were victorious with a time of 1:38.86.

After the relay the Jags held a 25 point lead at 40-15. However, the Billikens' depth turned the tide as they finished 1-2 in five of the final eight individual events and won a sixth. They edged ahead after the 200 IM 66-654 and then gradually pulled away for the win.

Sophomore Brett Ellsworth (Jasper, Ind./Jasper/University College) was a double winner for the Jags, winning both freestyle spring events. He won the 50 free in 22.09 and the 100 free in 49.83.

Freshman Brian Wheeler (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point/University College) was also a winner with a time of 4:55.20 in the 500 freestyle.

The IUPUI women's swim team traveled to the University of St. Louis for a dual meet on Saturday and came away with 138-87 loss. It was the final meet for the Jags before Christmas break.

IUPUI fell behind early in the meet and could not recover as the Billikens used their tremendous depth to outpoint the Jags. IUPUI had three individual winners in the meet, as well as a victorious relay team.

Sophomore Kristen Krey (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont/University College) easily outdistanced the field in winning the 50 freestyle. Her time of 25.08 was nearly a second better than her closest competitor.

Sophomore Lindsay Corn (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli/School of Technology) completed the IUPUI sweep of the freestyle spring events with a win in the 100 free. Her time of 55.49 was .80 ahead of the rest of the field.

Junior Clare Helphinstine (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield/School of Medicine) also picked up a win in the 200 breast with a time of 2:39.35.

Corn swam the lead-off leg of the victorious 200 free relay team. She was joined on the team by fellow sophomores Brandi Kropf (Middlebury, Ind./Northridge/School of Education) and Lauren Heyde (Greenwood, Ind./Whiteland/School of Physical Education & Tourism Management) and freshman Amy Rowe (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central/School of Liberal Arts). The quartet covered the course in a time of 1:45.68.
