IU Diving Adds Kahn to Recruiting Class

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, December 19. INDIANA's women's diving team has added high school senior Cassidy Kahn to its incoming 2007-08 class, head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber announced Monday, Dec. 19.

"We're really excited," Huber said. "I think Cassidy's got her best diving ahead of her. She's had some good coaching and she has good fundamentals. I know (former IU diver and current Columbia head coach) Gordon Spencer, who did work with her, spoke highly of her. She's a good recruit, so we're real happy she's coming to IU."

Kahn, a New York, N.Y., native, attends the Churchill School and Center, but dives for Stuyvesant High School, as Churchill does not field a team. Kahn won the 2006 New York City Public School Athletic League Open Championship in the one-meter, setting a city record with an 11-dive score of 554.30.

Kahn was accomplished level-10 gymnast before taking up diving two years ago. Since then, she has gone to USA Diving Nationals twice and qualified for AAU Nationals both years. Kahn took third place on the one-meter and fifth place on the three-meter at the 2006 AAU Nationals, earning AAU All-America status on both boards.

Also in 2006, Kahn represented New York City at the Empire State Games, which hosts more than 6,000 athletes in all sports. There, she took first place on the three-meter and second on the one-meter in the Scholastic Division.

Kahn dives for the New York Dive Club under coach Zhihua Hu. She is the daughter of Alfred and Patsy Kahn. Outside of diving, Kahn is treasurer of the Student Council and volunteers with Community Cats, a cat rescue organization in Westchester, N.Y.

"I met the team and the coaches and immediately felt like this was the place where I was supposed to be," Kahn said about her decision to attend Indiana. "I think this is a place where I can excel."

Kahn joins diver Heidi Mahnken (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo) and swimmers Kelsey Atchison (Silver Lake, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls), Amy Harriman (Hamilton, Ontario/Westmount Secondary), Jessica Hill (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut), Mariana Prutton (Pleasant Hill, Calif./Carondelet) and Amanda Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hills) in the Hoosiers' 2007-08 recruiting class.
