Italian Winter Open: Milorad Cavic Breaks Top 15; Ian Thorpe Continues Comeback

RICCIONE, Italy, December 17. THE final day of timed finals action at the Italian Winter Open came to a close with more long course meter racing.

Milorad Cavic jumped to 14th in the men's 100 fly ranking with a winning time of 52.10. Joeri Verlinden placed second in 52.43, short of his 10th-ranked 51.85. Peter Mankoc finished third in 53.00.

Federica Pellegrini cruised to victory in the women's 400 free with a 4:08.50. Her top time this year is a 4:01.97 from Worlds this past summer. Ophelie Etienne took second in 4:12.42, while Martina De Memme placed third in 4:12.55.

Fabio Scozzoli, who ranks second in the world in the men's 100 breast with a 59.42 from Worlds, won the event's title today in 1:00.54. Mattia Pesce placed second in 1:01.57, while Flavio Bizzarri earned third in 1:02.12.

Sebastiaan Verschuren snared the men's 200 free title in 1:48.20, while Filippo Magnini claimed second in 1:48.68. Marco Belotti earned third in 1:48.91. Notably, Ian Thorpe placed 10th in the event with a 1:51.51.

Niccolo Bonacchi turned in a 25.61 to win the men's 50 back. Mirco Di Tora finished second in 25.74, while Nick Driebergen earned third in 25.79. Silvia Di Pietro posted a 26.88 to win the women's 50 fly. Elena Di Liddo (26.97) and Ilaria Bianchi (27.31) placed second and third.

Chiara Boggiatto topped the women's 50 breast in 32.37, while Ilaria Scarcella placed second in 32.56. Michela Guzzetti touched third in 32.60. Stefania Pirozzi won the women's 400 IM in 4:47.26, while Susanna Negri (4:50.29) and Alessia Polieri (4:53.62) picked up second and third.

Elena Gemo won the women's 100 back in 1:01.05, while Carlotta Zofkova took second in 1:01.52. Ariana Barbieri placed third in 1:01.75. Erica Buratto posted a 55.92 to win the women's 100 free. Erika Ferraioli (56.01) and Alice Mizzau (56.06) took second and third.

Alessia Polieri topped the women's 200 fly in 2:11.54. Emanuela Albenzi finished second in 2:12.85, while Stefania Pirozzi posted a third-place 2:12.92. Michela Guzzetti captured the women's 200 breast in 2:28.96. Chiara Boggiatto (2:30.03) finished second, while Carlotta Toni and Giulia De Ascentis tied for third with matching 2:30.82s.

Gregorio Paltrinieri earned the men's 1500 free title in 15:04.57. Rocco Potenza touched second in 15:16.46, while Simone Ruffini wound up third in 15:20.16. Nick Driebergen touched out Sebastiano Ranfagni, 1:59.13 to 1:59.15, for the men's 200 back crown. Ben Stasiulis finished third in 1:59.33.

Federico Turrini snagged the men's 200 IM in 2:00.58, while Davide Cova (2:01.47) and Luca Angelo Dioli (2:02.08) rounded out the top three. Lucio Spadaro claimed the men's 50 free in 22.20, while Luca Dotto took second in 22.37. George Bovell wound up third in 22.44.
