Italian Spring Champs Feature Several Quick Times

RICCIONE, Italy, March 31. SOME of the big names in Italian swimming popped quality times – including several national marks – at the recently concluded Italian Spring Championships. A well-established force on the international scene, Emiliano Brembilla posted victories in the 400 freestyle (3:49.33), 800 free (7:58.38) and placed second to Filippo Magnini in the 200 free. Magnini touched the wall in 1:47.35 while Brembilla went 1:47.90. National records of 26.12 and 55.50 were set by Enrico Catalano in the 50 and 100 backstrokes.

Alessandro Terrin took top honors in the 50 and 100 breaststrokes, thanks to times of 28.10 and 1:01.38. Loris Facci followed Terrin in the 100 breast with an effort of 1:01.50, but Facci was triumphant in the 200 breast with a swim of 2:12.92. Paolo Bossini was the second-place finisher in 2:13.79. Meanwhile, Alessio Boggiatto doubled in the 200 and 400 I.M. events, going 2:00.77 and 4:17.19, respectively.

On the female side, Cristina Chiuso set a national record in the 50 free with a performance of 25.25 and Francesca Segat set a new Italian standard in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:08.53. Segat also checked in with a 59.58 effort in the 100 fly. Teenager Fedrrica Pellegrini won the 100 free (55.28) and 200 free (1:58.57) and placed second to Alessia Filippi in the 400 free. Filippi was timed in a national record of 4:08.56, just ahead of the 4:08.91 of Pellegrini. Chiara Boggiatto won the 100 breast (1:09.37) and 200 breast (2:31.53) and Elena Gemo set an Italian record in the 50 back (29.18).
