Italian Championships: Caterina Brighi Sets Italian Junior Record

LIVORNO, Italy, April 4. CATERINA Brighi, 16, broke the Italian junior record in the women's 200 IM at the Italian Championships held in Livorno.

Brighi clocked a time of 2:18.00 as she touched out Francesca Aceto (2:18.05) for the title. The heat proved to be hotly contested as Erica Buratto (2:18.24), Veronica Massari (2:18.34) and Giorgia Gramillano (2:18.50) all finished within half-a-second of Brighi.

Paola Cavallino began the night with a close call in the women's 200 fly. She touched in 2:11.10, while Francesca Segat (2:11.60) and Caterina Giacchetti (2:11.70) applied some pressure.

Alessandro Terrin dipped under 28 to scare his national record of 27.48 with a winning effort of 27.97 in the men's 50 breast, while Roberta Panara, who set the 50 breast national record two days ago, nearly went under 1:09 in the 100 with a time of 1:09.04 to beat national-record holder Chiara Boggiatto (1:09.70).

Luca Marin cruised in the men's 400 IM with a winning time of 4:16.71, more than a second ahead of Alessio Boggiatto's 4:18.04.

In the women's 100 free, Marialaura Simonetto upset national-record holder Federica Pellegrini, 55.77 to 55.98, while Erika Ferraioli took third in 56.28.

On the other end of the distance spectrum, Rachele Bruni snared the women's 800 free crown in 8:40.89.

Another close call came in the men's 100 fly as Mattia Nalesso surfaced with a victory in 53.51. Rudy Goldin (53.62) and Lorenzo Benatti (53.74) each gave chase in the event.

Alex Di Giorgio, Gianfranco Meschini, Simone Ciancarini and Nicola Cassio touched out Andrea Frovi, Emiliano Brembilla, Jonas Salgado and Michele Cosentino, 7:24.46 to 7:24.65, to win the men's 800 free relay, while Renata Fabiola Spagnolo, Alice Carpanese, Silvia Copetta and Simonetto won the women's 400 free relay in 3:43.76.
