Ironwoman Katinka Hosszu Wins Six of Eight Events on Night Two in Luxembourg

LUXEMBOURG, January 19. HUNGARY's Katinka Hosszu nearly had an event sweep tonight, but settled for “just” eight titles in two days at the Luxembourg Euro Meet during day two of the three-day extravaganza.

Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte, an Olympic gold medalist from this past summer, scorched the women's 50 breast with a winning time of 30.90. That swim beat her meet record of 31.39 set during prelims, that downed the 31.51 set by Janne Schafer back in 2009. Dorothea Brandt placed second in 31.91, while Caroline Ruhnau took third in 32.40. Hosszu, who is entered in every event this weekend, finished fifth in 33.13.

Hosszu rebounded in the women's 50 fly with her third title of the meet. She clocked a 27.09, while Brandt took second in 27.54. Iris Rosenberger wound up third in 27.55. Hosszu then doubled up tonight with a 2:00.64 to win the women's 200 free. Annika Bruhn placed second in 2:01.81, while Zsuzsanna Jakabos grabbed third in 2:02.31.

Hosszu's third title came by way of a bit of an upset. She clocked a 1:01.74 in the women's 100 back, lowering the meet record of Iryna Amshennikova (1:01.85) set back in 2006, and beat backstroke specialist Daryna Zevina this evening. Zevina finished second in 1:02.19, while Tanja Makaric took third in 1:03.68.

Hosszu followed with a victory in the women's 200 breast when she clocked a 2:32.57 after the meet had a 15-minute break before beginning the second half of the night. That pushed her to six wins thus far. Caroline Ruhnau snared second in 2:33.53, while Jessica Steiger snatched third in 2:37.32. Hosszu's seventh title of the meet came by way of the women's 200 fly, when she blitzed the field with a time of 2:12.26. Lisa Hoepink took second in 2:15.42, while Jakabos touched third in 2:17.48.

Hosszu then prevailed in the women's 200 IM with a winning time of 2:15.94. This came after she broke the meet record in prelims with a 2:14.49. That swim beat Barbora Zavadova's effort of 2:14.57 from last year. Bethany Carson finished second in 2:17.80, while Jakabos claimed third in 2:18.55. Hosszu ran her gold-medal tally to eight so far this weekend.

Hosszu ended the day with a fourth-place finish in the women's 50 free in 26.13. Brandt won in 25.36, while Meilutyte (25.60) and Julie Meynen (25.73) completed the top three.

Hosszu, who already has been picking up money left and right in cash prizes, is looking for more sponsorship dollars. After a Twitter follower suggested that Hosszu be sponsored by Duracell because of her always ambitious event scheduling, Hosszu started working her Twitter feed to get in contact with Duracell. A new sponsor in the sport would be great for the swimming community at large.

Marco Koch and Igor Borysik deadheated in the men's 50 breast with matching times of 28.30, while Hendrik Feldwehr took third in 28.42. Koch then crushed Borysik in the men's 200 breast, 2:10.53 to 2:14.41, later in the evening. Laurent Carnol finished third in 2:15.68.

Yannick Lebherz cruised to victory in the men's 200 free with a time of 1:49.93, while Sergiy Frolov took second in 1:50.25. Pholien Systermans earned third in 1:50.73. Lebherz then doubled up with a 2:02.29 to win the men's 200 IM. Nimrod Hayet (2:07.41) and Viktor Bromer (2:08.49) completed the podium.

Francois Heersbrandt hit the wall in 24.19 to win the men's 50 fly. Raphael Stacchiotti took second in 24.89, while Matthias Lindenbauer placed third in 24.95. Jean-Francois Schneiders raced to the win in the men's 100 back with a 57.17. Jeremy-Jay Krogull-Hull placed second in 58.74, while Lukas Nattmann wound up third in 59.15.

Viktor Bromer emerged victorious in the men's 200 fly with a time of 2:02.56 with Marius Kusch well behind in second with a 2:05.88. Dan Jones rounded out the podium with a third-place 2:08.08. Heersbrandt doubled up with a 22.73 to win the men's 50 free. Christoph Fildebrandt took second in 23.20, while Nils Roetgers earned third in 23.47.
