Iowa vs. Wisconsin

MADISON, Wisconsin, October 20. THE University of Iowa men's swimming and diving team competed against the Wisconsin Badgers at the Big Ten opener Thursday night at the Natatorium. The Hawkeyes set a pool record in the 50 free and beat the Badgers 230.5-63.50.
"We had a great start to the Big Ten season tonight and we're happy with our performance," said head coach Marc Long. "We're looking forward to hosting Michigan State at home next Saturday."

Last season's Big Ten runner-up in the 50 free, Ryan Phelan set a pool record in the event with a time of 20.27. The previous record was held by former Hawkeye and Big Ten Champion, Tom Williams, which was set in 1988. This marked Phelan's second record in the event after setting the pool record at Iowa's annual black and gold intrasquad meet Oct. 8.

Dustin Rhoads, Duncan Partridge, Paul Gordon and Phelan kicked off the Big Ten opener with the 200 medley relay. The quartet posted Iowa's first win of the night with a time of 1:31.22 in the event. Iowa's 'B' team finished second in 1:32.47.

Gordon recorded two individual first place finishes. His first victory came in 200 free when he touched the wall first with a time of 1:39.64. The Sioux Falls, S.D., native claimed his second victory with a time of 49.46 in the 100 fly.

Iowa's school record holder in the 200 IM, Tyler Lentz, posted a first place finish in the event with a time of 1:52.63. He collected another individual first place finish in the 200 fly (1:50.56).

The Badgers did not have any divers compete. Iowa's Aresen Sarkisian finished first on the three-meter springboard with a score of 263.48, while teammate Osvel Molina placed first on the one-meter board with his score of 331.95.

Gordon, Brian Tremml, Partridge and Phelan teamed up and concluded the competition with the 400 free relay. The quartet was touched out by Wisconsin and finished second with a time 3:04.84.

Iowa returns home Oct. 29 when it hosts Michigan State. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m. at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool.
