Iowa State Adds Transfer Imelda Wistey

AMES, Iowa, June 2. THE Iowa State swimming and diving squad added more depth to its breaststroke and individual medley events with the addition of Grinnell College transfer Imelda Wistey, who signed a financial aid agreement Wednesday. She becomes the 11th newcomer for the Cyclones for the 2011-12 season.

"Imelda is a very talented swimmer in many different strokes," Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. "Her 100 breast is her best race right now and we are looking to develop her into a very good 200 breaststroker. She is also good in the fly, 200 IM and can swim some sprint free if needed."

Wistey enrolled at Grinnell last season and put up a big season for the Pioneers, earning All-America honors in the 100 and 200 breast. She also collected two individual Midwest Conference titles and two relay titles. Wistey left Grinnell as the school record holder in five individual events and two relay teams.

Wistey's addition to the Iowa State roster provides more depth to an already strong group of breaststroke swimmers in Marley Suckow and Emily Wiltsie along with incoming freshman Alicia Stearns.

"She is faster than Emily and Marley in the 100 breast right now," Sorenson noted. "She has a little more speed than Emily but Emily has more endurance for the 200. They should be a good combination for us to be strong in the breaststroke races."

Wistey has connections within the Iowa State squad already as she was a high school and club teammate of current Cyclone swimmer Dani Harris. Assistant head coach Kelly Nordell oversaw part of Wistey's club career when she was coach at Des Moines Swim Federation prior to joining the Cyclones.

Wistey is the Iowa high school-record holder in the 100 breast which she swam on her way to the 2009 state title in the event. Wistey was a member of two state title winning squads at West Des Moines Valley and a member of three state champion relay squads with the Tigers. In club competition, she is the state's open record holder in the 100-yard breaststroke and still holds the 100-yard and 100-meter breaststroke record for the age 17-18 division.
