International Flavor to SMU’s Latest Recruiting Class

DALLAS, June 4. SOUTHERN Methodist University has signed 10 recruits for next season, a class that is considered to be one of the finest in the 16-year tenure of coach Eddie Sinnott. Leading the way is Alex Hetland, a multi-event standout from Norway.

Most accomplished in the breaststroke, Hetland is also strong in the individual medley disciplines and butterfly. Last year, Hetland qualified for the finals of the 100-meter breaststroke at the World Short Course Championships in Indianapolis.

Hetland is one of three international recruits who have signed with the Mustangs, as he will be joined by Luka Vrtovec (Slovenia) and Michael Dmitriev (Israel). Vrtovec is a former medalist at the European Junior Championships and will add support in the sprint-freestyle events. As for Dmitriev, the distance freestyler holds 11 Israeli Junior National records.

Other recruits, all American, include Mitchell Johnson (breaststroke), Nathan Clark (I.M./fly), Colton Ingraham (multi-event) and Chris Ginder (distance free). Also signed with SMU are Jonathan Lane (breast/I.M.), Travis Callaghan (distance free) and Daniel Veale (multi-event).
