Industry News: Official Russian Swim Federation Event Managed by U.S. Computer Technology for First Time

By Vasili Pavlov, Colorado Time System's 3S Russian Correspondent

MOSCOW, Russia, December 30. COLORADO Time Systems' (CTS) technology working together with Super Sport Systems meet management software was used at the Russian National Student Swimming Championship held in Moscow this weekend. This marked the first time ever national caliber swim meet results were recorded on American-made equipment and processed automatically using a special software specifically created to address Russian swimming meet regulations with output in Russian.

Previously, official results were input manually in other-language based programs. This often delayed the announcement of official results, and sometimes even led to inaccurate postings. The new timing system provided by CTS eliminates the potential for human error, is many times faster, and is absolutely accurate. The significance of this is obvious when you consider major events like this are telecast live all over the world.

US-based Colorado Time Systems provided electronic touchpads, Timing Console and other hardware for the new system recently installed at the Russian National Sports University in Moscow (RGUFK). Super Sport Systems, also a US-based sports technology company, provided the meet management software fully compatible with CTS equipment. Although this was a debut of their combined efforts at a national level event, the CTS-3S system performed virtually flawlessly. According to Oleg Popov, the Chair of Department of Theory and Methods of Swimming at RGUFK "This demonstration of new race meet technology was a real break-through for officials and participants. The results of each heat were made official in seconds – something never happened before. We look forward to working with Colorado and 3S and hope that this technology will become more available for other Russian facilities"

Instead of relying on manually prepared entry form the new system uses easily configurable Microsoft Excel-based spreadsheets written in Russian. The new 3S Meet Management software simplifies the meet registration process significantly, and captures all event information in digital form. Coaches can also use it to track and analyze swimmer results during the season using 3S online module. This new software is the first in a series of programs from 3S designed to assist Colorado Time Systems in their efforts to provide timing, scoring, and display systems to all of Russia and the Eastern bloc.

Colorado Time Systems is the leading manufacturer of timing, scoring and display systems for aquatic sports venues in the US, and has installations in over 120 countries, and local agents worldwide. Super Sport Systems (3S) is the leading provider of online Training Design programs, and currently assists over 150 collegiate and club swimming programs in the US alone. Their program is used daily by more than 20,000 athletes and elite coaches in over 40 countries. RGUFK – is Russia premier University preparing coaches and specialists in the field of physical education. RGUFK pool was one of venues of 1980 Moscow Olympics.
