BERKELEY HEIGHTS, New Jersey, October 2. WHAT comes first, swimming or discipline? The October 2007 issue of Swim with a Purpose, the online magazine provided by and for swimmers at no charge, is dedicated to the topic of discipline.

The articles in the October edition illustrate that success in competitive swimming requires, among other attributes, discipline in training and thinking. Cat Whetstone, a junior at Rutgers University, details the demands of college swimming and paints a picture of the discipline that has taken her to the international level. Brielle White credits her age-group head coach Jim Ellis of the Philadelphia Department of Recreation for instilling the discipline that resulted in her landing a scholarship to swim for the University of Virginia and becoming an ACC conference record holder. Up and coming Y swimmer Kyle Madley shares his strategy for achieving National Age Group distinction.

Meanwhile, NCAA Division III champion coach Jim Steen shares his views that it takes more than discipline to be a great swimmer. He says, "It's the 10 percent who are disciplined, hard working and can imagine themselves as champions that achieve the greatest level of success." Additionally, several Masters swimmers impart some of the wisdom they have acquired over the years about the sport.

Two articles provide a guide: one offers a checklist of five items that comprise a successful meet day routine; the other lays out the ultimate course of action to prevent breaststroke injuries.

A crossword puzzle presents a review of several phenomenal swims at the 2007 US Nationals by some of the greats: Dara Torres, Katie Hoff, Kate Ziegler, Michael Phelps, Erik Vendt and Ryan Lochte. There is no doubt that their swims represent the fruit of discipline.
