BERKELEY HEIGHTS, New Jersey, January 2. THE January 2008 issue of Swim with a Purpose, the online magazine provided by and for swimmers at no charge, has something for everyone.

An interview with Paul Yetter, coach of world record holder Katie Hoff, reveals how he uses rock climbing to mix up dryland training for his athletes. One of Yetter's Senior Elite swimmers, National Junior Team member Felicia Lee, describes the burning she feels in her arms as she stretches for the "blue rock".

This is an Olympic year, so this issue includes Olympic Trials picks for each of the 26 individual events that could make for exciting headlines. One of the headlines could read: the youngest ever Olympic gold medalist will get another chance at an Olympic medal after not making the 2004 team. Several of the Olympic Trials picks were recipients of 2008 Golden Goggle Awards, which is captured in the traditional crossword puzzle.

For those athletes looking to swim in college, there is an article that lays out different scenarios to be considered when deciding what collegiate environment would provide the right fit. Do you have Olympic Trials cuts and are looking for a full ride at a Division I powerhouse university, are you trying to parlay a senior national cut into gaining admittance into an Ivy or are you seeking an academic scholarship at a Division III institution where you can be a stand-out athlete immediately?

The inspirational article on Anthony Nesty shows that the right fit for this Olympic gold medalist is at his alma mater, the University of Florida, where he now coaches some athletes that have migrated to the U.S. to seize training opportunities, just as he had done decades ago. Coach Nesty reminisces about his boyhood days of climbing mango trees to pick fresh fruits in this homeland Suriname, a tiny South American country bordering the Atlantic Ocean.

Open water swimming is the hot topic of late and there is a piece that uses the experience of three swimmers to reveal what you need to know to get started. They counsel on swimming smart and swimming aggressively.

There is such a joy in giving a gift that is appreciated. See the list of small gift items that are perfect for the swimmer and won't break your piggy bank.

The issue concludes with recognition of swimmers from New Jersey Swimming who made the USA Swimming 2007 Scholastic All-American Team. Some of these scholar athletes are now freshmen at college or at an Academy, after making the team for the maximum three years.
