Industry News: Barbados Set to Host Two Open Water Swims

CARLISLE BAY, Barbados, March 1. THIS gorgeous Bay is the venue for two new Open Water Swimming events on the swim calendar. Sea swim events will be held here: July 6-7 & October 26-27, 2013. The format will be the same for July and October where there will be a 1.5km swim on the Saturday and a 5km swim on the Sunday.

Carlisle Bay is a picturesque, crescent shaped bay with warm, calm, clear waters bordered by a long stretch of white sand. The Bay is a favourite for local open water swimmers, snorkelers and paddle-boarders. Visiting swimmers often enjoy swimming in these crystal waters. Recent visitors include a group from Red Tide Masters Swimmers of New York and “Cruise To Run Caribbean” (runners, but they love the sea conditions in Barbados so they host a swim here too!).

These new Swim events are designed to attract open water swimmers & tri-athletes from across the globe to swim and enjoy Barbados with family and friends. We will welcome swimmers of all ability levels, from recreational to elite. Non-swimming partners, friends, spouses and kids can enjoy the activities associated with the swim and many other island attractions.

The two new events are being spearheaded by Zary Evelyn, a Barbadian, former National Water Polo representative and avid recreational open water swimmer.
SwimBarbadosVacations (SBV) has been created by Zary to host Sea Swims in Barbados annually.

Two well-known veteran Barbadian swimmers who have long been associated with swimming in Barbados, brothers Chris & Peter Gibbs, are also part of the organising team. Both have a long list of accolades to their names, most notably being their swims of the English Channel (Chris, 2003) and Lake Ontario (Peter, 2004). Peter is currently the President of the very active Barbados Federation of Island Triathletes (BFIT). They will bring tremendous knowledge of swimming and competition to SBV in the form of technical planning of the routes and a multitude of other details that will allow for a safe and enjoyable swim festival.

The initiative has been welcomed by the Barbados Amateur Swimming Association (BASA) and its President, Andrew Kirby, an open water enthusiast. Several organisations and local companies have provided sponsorship to promote the events defray the costs of hosting meticulously planned events that are of a high standard.

Our web site provides details on events, dates, age groups, prizes, partner hotels, organisers ( http://www.swimbarbadosvacations.com ) and see face book for additional photos of the venue (https://www.facebook.com/SwimBarbadosVacations).

We look forward with great excitement to welcoming swimmers from near and far to swim with us. Our very enthusiastic local swimmers and tri-athletes are eagerly awaiting this new challenge!
