Indianapolis vs. Wayne State

DETROIT, Michigan, January 12. IN dual meets pitting the GLIAC's top teams from 2007, the Wayne State swimming and diving teams defeated Indianapolis, 115-90 (men) and 132-103 (women), at the Matthaei Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Warrior men won six of the nine events to beat the Greyhounds for the second straight season, led by Sean Smith (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western) and Per Bergstrom (Fagersta, Sweden) who each took two first-place finishes.

Wayne State started strong with the first-place 200 medley relay combination of Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janiero, Brazil), Bergstrom, Smith, and Tiago Oliveira (Raul Soares, Brazil), posting a time of 1:37.46.

In the 1000 freestyle, Matt Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) placed third (10:06.43) and James Ekleberry (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale) came in fourth (10:15.70).

Smith won the 200 free (1:46.27), followed by Oliveira in second (1:47.55) and Alex Davidson (Napoleon, Mich./Jackson) in fourth (1:48.37).

Bedran and Rzepa took second (21.90) and third (22.66), respectively, in the 50 free, while A.J. Erard (Troy, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) and Matt Carlson (Plymouth, Mich./Canton) went one-two in the 400 individual medley, posting times of 4:14.92 and 4:18.59.

Smith's second victory of the day came in the 100 butterfly (53.39). Brett Salogar (Bay City, Mich./Western) came in third (53.99) and Justin Shields (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) placed fourth (55.10).

The trio of Bergstrom (48.13), Oliveira (48.97), and Rzepa (49.36) grabbed the top three spots in the 100 free, and Bedran finished second in the 100 back (52.63).

In the 500 free, Leix finished second (4:46.85) and Ekleberry touched fourth (4:58.56).

Bergstrom won the 100 breaststroke (1:00.49), followed by Jay Koehler (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lake Shore) in second (1:01.45) and Matt Victor (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) in fourth (1:03.13).

In the final event of the day, the foursome of Davidson, Shields, Rzepa and Victor took second in the 200 free relay (1:28.77).

Freshman diver Cassie Chetosky (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica) eclipsed the NCAA qualifying standards in both the one-meter and three-meter events to lead the Wayne State women's team.

Chetosky took second place on both boards, scoring 245.85 on the one-meter and 261.50 on the three-meter. Senior Erika Barczak (Williamston, Mich.) won both events with respective scores of 253.95 and 274.50.

The Warriors won five of the individual swims, with two of those victories earned by Elaina Hogle (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) in the 400 individual medley (4:37.64) and the 100 freestyle (54.62). Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison) also won two events, the 1000 free (10:31.91) and the 500 free (5:09.29).

The 200 medley relay combination of Sara Franklin (Caro, Mich.), Jodi Scott (Windsor, Ont./Riverside S.S.), Agata Zalewska (Swietochlowice, Poland), and Julie Danaher (Allen Park, Mich.) came in second (1:52.42)

Second-place finisher Abbey Green (Dearborn, Mich.) and third-place Maggie Young (Tecumseh, Ont./St. Anne's) followed St. Andrew in the 1000 free with times of 10:51.29 and 11:22.59.

St. Andrew also finished second in the 200 free (1:55.42) with Catherine Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) placing third (2:00.66) and Haintso Rakouth (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) claiming fourth (2:02.57).

In the 50 free, Zalewska came in third (26.01) and Danaher finished fourth (26.03). Zalewska also earned a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:01.67) while Laura Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) came in right behind her in third (1:01.74).

The Warriors went one-two in both the 100 backstroke and the 500 freestyle. Franklin led the pack in the former (1:01.60), and teammate Maria Johnston (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) touched second (1:03.40). Catherine Leix came in second in the 500 free (5:16.04) behind St. Andrew.

In exhibition swims after clinching the victory following the three-meter diving competition, the Warriors recorded the top three times in the 100 breaststroke (Hogle – 1:08.46, Johnston – 1:08.68, Scott – 1:09.67) as well as the 200 free relay with Rakouth, Danaher, Green, and Catherine Leix (1:41.30).

Wayne State will host Calvin College in a double dual next Saturday, Jan. 19, at 1:00 p.m.
