Indiana vs. Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Michigan, January 9. LED by victories in nine events, including a sweep of the diving competition, the 12th-ranked Indiana women's swimming and diving team came away with a 130-113 victory over No. 16 Michigan Saturday afternoon at Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Diver Gabby Agostino swept the springboard diving events, taking the 1-meter with a season-best score of 306.37, and also posting a season best in the 3-meter with a winning score of 326.55. Christina Kouklakis was fourth in the 1-meter (278.63), followed by Nicole Brehm in fifth with a season-best score of 268.27. Rounding out the top 10 were Amy Korthauer in sixth (260.02), Amy Cozad ninth (236.32) and Cassidy Kahn 10th (231.68-season best).

Cozad took fourth on the 3-meter (280.20-season best), with Brehm sixth (262.50-season best), Kouklakis seventh (256.35), Heidi Mahnken ninth (240.45-season best) and Korthauer 10th (234.00). Korthauer made it a clean sweep for IU in diving with a win on the platform, tallying 331.73 points. Agostino was third (282.90-season best), followed by Mahnken fourth (248.78) and Cozad sixth (246.53).

The Hoosiers opened the swimming portion of the dual with a win in the 400-medley relay, as Taylor Wohrley, Ashley Specht, Donna Smailis and Margaux Farrell clocked a time of 3:45.93. Kim Tracey, Amilee Smith, Brittany Barwegen and Justine Jones combined for a fourth-place finish (3:56.17).

Brittany Strumbel won the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 1:49.67. Nikki White was second in 1:49.95, followed by Wohrley fourth with a season best of 1:51.92. Courey Schaefer placed seventh in 1:56.20.

Smailis was victorious in the 100 free after touching the wall in 50.89. Strumbel took fourth with a season best of 51.40, followed by Farrell in 51.56. Schaefer rounded out the Hoosier contingent in seventh (53.99).

Kate Fesenko remained perfect in 200-yard backstroke competition this season with a winning time of 2:01.74. Ashley Jones was fourth after clocking a time of 2:05.00.

White won the 500 freestyle competition in 4:50.18, while Wohrley, competing in the 500 free for the first time this season, was fourth with a time of 4:59.92. Cassie Luhrsen finished fifth (5:03.23), and Ashley Kranz eighth (5:15.57).

Amilee Smith led a 1-2 Indiana finish in the 200 breaststroke, finishing in 2:17.90. Allysa Vavra was second in a time of 2:18.13, with Specht fifth (2:23.61). Barwegen was seventh (2:28.08), with exhibitioned times of 2:20.66 from Katelyn Ishee, and 2:35.62 from Afton Robertson.

Luhrsen paced the Hoosiers in the 1,650 freestyle with a third-place showing (17:09.81), while Amilee Smith competed in the event for the first time this season and finished fourth in 17:15.53. Kranz placed seventh (17:38.70), and Laura Head eighth (17:53.96).

Farrell was runner-up in the 50 free with a time of 23.93. Smailis' time of 24.31 was good for fourth, while Justine Jones took seventh (25.58) and Kristen Mitsch eighth (26.64). Fesenko led a 2-3-4 finish for the Hoosiers in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:03.38, followed by Vavra (2:04.43) and Ashley Jones (2:05.75). Tracey took seventh (2:09.31), with exhibitioned times from Ishee (2:14.94-season best) and Robertson (2:18.73).

Fesenko also took second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:59.67. Barwegen was third in 2:02.19, with Tracey sixth (2:07.43) and Ashley Jones eighth (2:12.19).

The meet concluded with the 400 freestyle relay as Strumbel, White, Vavra and Schaefer combined for a third-place finish (3:32.72). Justine Jones, Luhrsen, Robertson and Specht were fifth (3:44.80), while Kranz, Head, Ishee and Mitsch finished sixth (3:47.41).

The Hoosiers return to action on January 23 when they take on rival Purdue at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington. The meet will begin at 11 a.m. ET.

For the men, The 20th-ranked Indiana men's swimming and diving team opened 2010 with a 158-82 dual meet loss at No. 7 Michigan Saturday afternoon at Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Hoosier divers led the way with a sweep of all three events, led by first-place finishes from David Piercy in the 1-meter (306.00) and 3-meter (337.34) springboard events. Teammate Casey Johnson took the platform title with a score of 341.78. Zac Nees was third in the 1-meter (264.82), fourth in the 3-meter (248.69) and third in the platform (336.15). Johnson took fourth in the 1-meter (250.64) and third in the 3-meter (293.62).

Indiana's lone victory in the swimming competition came in the 100 freestyle as Ante Zoricic touched the wall in 46.05. Mark Wetzel was sixth (48.19), followed by Daniel Kanorr in seventh (49.00) and Bryan Chovanec in eighth (49.27). Bader Al-Muhana posted an exhibitioned time of 51.04.

The Hoosier started the afternoon with a fifth-place finish in the 400 medley relay as Doug Spraul, Aaron Opell, Tim Blue and Bryant Honsa combined for a time of 3:28.30. In the 1,650 freestyle it was Illya Larin leading the way with a fourth-place finish (15:52.46). Bart Ginocchio was sixth with a season-best time of 16:12.10, followed by Brenden Butler in seventh (16:29.27) and Alex Kotliarsky eighth (16:29.96).

Titus Knight took second in the 200 free (1:39.53), as Zoricic came in sixth (1:44.25), John Schnittker seventh (1:44.79) and Bryant Honsa eighth (1:45.58). Posting exhibitioned times were Jon Hueni (1:45.84), Al-Muhana (1:50.77) and Ryan Downey (1:51.08-season best).

In the 50-yard sprint to the wall, Chovanec took third in 21.00, followed by Kanorr sixth in a season-best time of 21.59. Wetzel was seventh (21.72) and Spraul eighth (23.02). Al-Muhana had an exhibitioned time of 23.18.

Kevin Happ led the way in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:56.51, good for fifth place. Opell followed in sixth at 1:57.34, with Sam Trahin seventh (1:59.64) and Austin Steel eighth (1:59.69).

Tyler Shedron's time of 1:52.13 earned him a second-place finish in the 200 butterfly, with Blue placing fifth (1:56.60), Hueni sixth (1:56.84) and Trahin eighth (1:57.87). Al-Muhana had an exhibitioned time of 1:58.06, which is a season best.

Spraul was fourth in the 200 backstroke (1:50.82), as Happ took sixth with a season best of 1:54.09. Rounding out the Hoosier contingent were Steel in seventh (1:59.24) and Blue eighth (2:00.41).

Knight followed up his second-place finish in the 200 free with a third-place showing in the 500 free (4:32.01). Larin finished fifth (4:41.34), with Shedron sixth (4:42.30) and Butler eighth (4:52.84). Exhibitioned times came from Schnittker (4:42.55-season best), Kotliarsky (4:50.92) and Downey (4:51.99-season best).

Opell was a second-place finisher in the 200 breaststroke, clocking in at 2:06.20. Butler was third in 2:13.39, Steel fourth (2:16.34-season best) and Trahin fifth (2:18.47).

In the final event of the day, Zoricic, Knight, Honsa and Shedron went 3:05.60 for a second-place finish in the 400 freestyle. The third-place team of Chovanec, Larin, Wetzel and Schnittker touched the wall in 3:13.98, while Hueni, Al-Muhana, Kanorr and Happ were fourth (3:20.35).

The Hoosiers are back in the pool next Saturday as they travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Buckeyes at the McCorkle Aquatics Pavilion, site of the 2010 Big Ten Championships and the 2010 NCAA Championships. The dual meet is set to begin at Noon ET.
