Indiana vs. Kentucky

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, October 23. THE Indiana women’s swimming and diving team improved to a perfect 2-0 in dual meets with a 156-129 win over Kentucky Saturday morning at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

Led by a strong opening 50-yard backstroke from Taylor Wohrley the IU A team of Wohrley, Allysa Vavra, Brittany Barwegen and Sara Delay took first in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:43.96. In third at 1:46.22 was the group of Ashley Jones, Ashley Specht, Kim Tracey and Christina Gonzalez.

Competing in their second meet in as many days, the Hoosiers went with a different lineup in the 1,000 freestyle. Brittany Strumbel, normally a 200 free swimmer, went out to a quick lead and never looked back with a winning time of 10:13.65. Sara Delay was second in 10:25.74, with Courey Schaefer third (10:26.04).

Jones took second in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.22, while Nikki White was third in 1:52.90. Lindsay Vrooman put up a fourth-place finish with her time of 1:54.12.

Wohrley had a body-length lead after 50 yards in the 100-yard backstroke and earned her second win on the weekend with a time of 55.51. Brenna Maclean was third at 58.82, 3/100ths of a second behind second-place finisher Meg Eppler of Kentucky.

Vavra picked up her first win of the year in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:04.21. Ashley Specht placed second (1:05.06) and Bronwyn Pasloski fourth (1:05.72).

It was Barwegen’s second win this weekend in the 200 butterfly (2:00.42). Vrooman took second in 2:06.67, and Maclean rounded out the IU sweep in 2:07.81.

Wohrley raced to the wall in 24.12 to finish second in the 50-yard freestyle, while Strumbel placed fourth with a time of 24.33.

Delay paced the Hoosiers in the 100 freestyle with a second-place finish (52.41), while Strumbel was fifth (52.79).

Wohrley recorded her first win of the season in the 200 backstroke and second victory of the day with a time of 2:01.81. Jones was second (2:03.75) and Tracey fourth (2:05.16).

Vavra’s second win of the morning and second win of the season in the 200 breaststroke resulted in a time of 2:17.70. Pasloski took second (2:20.38) and Katelyn Ishee third (2:22.66) with Brittney Phelan fourth (2:24.26).

After a false start in the men’s 200 breaststroke the women’s 500 free start was pushed up and Nikki White paced the Indiana 1-2-3 finish with her time of 4:57.28. Vrooman was at 5:00.01 and Schaefer 5:01.23.

Barwegen took the lead in the final 50 yards of the 100 butterfly to win in 54.99, her second win of the day. Tracey was third (57.45) and Maclean fifth (58.68).

Gabby Agostino took her second-straight title in the women’s 3-meter diving with a score of 345.53. Amy Cozad was the runner-up with 279.83 points, while newcomer Kate Hillman was fourth (273.60).

Vavra staked herself a large lead in the breaststroke leg and finished strong for a win in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:02.73. Jones was second in 2:05.84 and Tracey fourth (2:08.19).

Indiana capped off its team victory with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay as Strumbel, Delay, Stephanie Armstrong and Schaefer clocked a time of 3:28.81.

Brittany Feldman made her first IU appearance since the 2008-09 season and was victorious with a score of 312.83 on the 1-meter springboard. Agostino took third (282.45) and Cassidy Kahn fourth (273.15).

The Hoosiers are back at the CBAC next Friday and Saturday when they play host to Michigan and Texas in a double dual meet. The meet will take place in three sessions beginning at noon on Friday. The teams will also swim at 6 p.m. Friday night and 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

Eric Ress touched the wall first on the opening leg of the 200-yard medley relay but the Kentucky A squad took the lead on the breaststroke leg. IU was 5/100ths of a second behind after the butterfly but the Hoosiers could not catch up as Ress, Tyler Lemert, Cody Weik and Bryan Chovanec took second with a time of 1:32.37, 7/100ths of a second behind Kentucky’s winning time of 1:32.30.

Competing in his second 1,000 freestyle event in as many days, Illya Larin took an early lead and lapped the competition with a winning time of 9:20.14. That led a Hoosier sweep with Ryan Hinshaw second (9:25.88) and Brenden Butler third (9:28.98).

Titus Knight picked up his second win on the weekend in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.16, out-dueling teammate Ress who took second in 1:39.22. John Schnittker came on the final 50 yards to finish third in 1:42.96.

With backstroke specialist Ress not in the race, Doug Spraul led a 1-2-3 sweep at 51.16. James Wells was second (51.32) and Austin Steel third (52.45).

Cody Miller was the top Hoosier in the 100 breaststroke race at 58.25, while Lemert was third in 58.31.

Tyler Shedron’s second victory this weekend in the 200 butterfly came in a time of 1:50.79. Jim Barbiere followed in 1:51.98, and Weik in 1:52.21.

It was Chovanec out-racing the competition in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.75, his second win in the event this season. Ante Zoricic was fifth at 21.24.

Knight’s second win of the morning came in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.46. Zoricic was third (46.83) and Barbiere fourth (47.03).

With Ress sitting out his marquee event, the 200 backstroke, Doug Spraul chased down Kentucky’s Anthony O’Driscoll over the final 50 yards to win in 1:51.71. Steel placed third (1:54.18) and Wells fourth (1:54.26).

Butler and Lemert battled from the start in the 200 breaststroke with Butler winning in 2:07.54 and Lemert second in 2:07.76. Sam Trahin was third at 2:08.79.

Larin took his second distance victory of the day in the 500 free with a winning time of 4:31.20. Hinshaw was second (4:32.55), Barbiere third (4:35.68) and Andrew Taylor fourth (4:37.43).

Ress and Shedron tied for the win the 100 butterfly at 51.19. Spraul finished third in 51.52.

David Piercy won his first event of the season, taking the 1-meter springboard at 354.90 points. Zac Nees was second (336.00) and Darian Schmidt third (333.68).

Ress’ strong backstroke gave him the lead early in the 200 individual medley and he hung on for the win with a time of 1:51.67. Weik was second in 1:54.72, and Trahin fourth (1:56.96).

Indiana’s A squad of Knight, Barbiere, Zoricic and Shedron had a half second lead at the halfway point of the 400 freestyle relay and that lead grew to more than two seconds after Zoricic’s swim. Shedron brought the quartet home for a time of 3:03.26.

On the 3-meter springboard, Nees took second with 357.08 points, with Casey Johnson third (337.28) and Schmidt fourth (335.40).

Indiana will be back in the pool Nov. 5-6 as it plays host to swimming powers Texas and Michigan in a double dual meet.
