Indiana Senior Murph Halasz Tabbed Conference Swimmer of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, IN, January 5. AFTER helping No. 13 Indiana to its second consecutive invitational title with a win at the Orange Bowl Classic on Dec. 30 in Key Largo, Fla., senior Murph Halasz was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for the week of Jan. 3, the school announced.

"Murphy has been training really well for over a month now, so it is great to see him recognized for all the preparation in practice," Head Coach Ray Looze said. "Additionally, his leadership skills as captain have been invaluable to our young team."

Halasz snared his first Swimmer of the Week accolade and IU's third of the season, after claiming a pair of victories in the 50 SCM backstroke and as the third leg of the title-winning 200 SCM medley relay squad. The Richmond, Va., native also finished in fourth in the 50 SCM freestyle as well as eighth in the 50 SCM breaststroke.

Previously, freshman Todd Patrick picked up the weekly honor after a double-win performance against Evansville. Additionally, junior Kevin Swander captured Co-Swimmer of the Week after tallying an event title and a trio of second-place finishes in the Hoosiers' first dual meet of the season against perennial powerhouse Texas.

Next up, the Cream and Crimson returns to action Jan. 7 for a high-noon showdown between top-15 teams as No. 11 Tennessee heads into the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind. The meet will mark the final home appearance for IU seniors Richard Bryant, Alex Burns, Marc Carlton, Brian Ellsworth, Murph Halasz, Niles Madison, Brian Metzler and David Winck.
