Indiana River Leads Florida International After Day One

MIAMI, Florida, November 3. THE Florida International University women's swimming & diving team claimed five individual wins, including a team-high three by sophomore Sara Giovannoni (Modena, Italy), in a dual meet versus Indian River Community College at the Bay Vista Aquatic Center on Friday evening.

Giovannoni picked up wins in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.94), 200-yard freestyle (1:56.97) and 500-yard freestyle (5:09.79), recording the team's best performances of the 2006 season in both the 100 breast and 500 free.

Senior Zita Zalai (Szeged, Hungary) added to FIU's win column, placing first in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.75 seconds, while junior Lindsey Overman (Valrico, Fla./Durant) posted her first individual win of 2006, claiming the 200-yard IM in a season-best 2:14.81.

Overman led the FIU 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 IM, as sophomore Katelynn Stevens (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University) placed second in a season-best 2:15.19, followed by senior Sarah Perfetti (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) in third place in 2:17.85.

Zalai added to a solid meet with a runner-up finish in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.20 seconds, and was a part of the Golden Panthers' winning 400-yard medley relay. The relay of freshman Katie Thompson (Blairsville, Ga./Union County), Perfetti, Zalai and senior Paula Olano (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela/IRCC) won in 4:09.03, while FIU's "B" relay of freshman Nicola MacKenzie (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake), Overman, Stevens and sophomore Storie Borgmann (Miami Springs, Fla./Lourdes) finished second in 4:15.51.

Junior Lindsay Lowell (Cooper City, Fla./NC State) was runner up in the 3-meter diving event with a season-best 251.175 points, while junior Amanda Smolen (Largo, Fla./Largo) placed third in the 1-meter event with a season-best 216.45 points.
