Indiana Girls High School State Championships; Carmel Downs National Public School Record

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, February 13. THE Indiana Girls High School State Championships took place at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis. Carmel won its 25th consecutive state title, amassing 382 points, well ahead of the next best. Homestead took second (230), while Center Grove placed third overall (200).

As the score shows, the Carmel girls dominated the meet, winning five individual events and all three relays. Rhiannon Sheets won the 200 free in 1:47.09, breaking the Olympic gold medalist Lindsay Benko's state record of 1:48.08 by nearly a second. Teammate Lacey Locke came away the most successful individual of the meet, winning the 200 IM (2:00.71) and 100 back (54.26). Carly Marshall won the 50 free in 23.35, while Lauren Jordan won the 500 free in 4:47.69.

Locke, Samantha Shaheen, Ariana Bullard, and Marshall won the 200 medley relay (1:41.42) – also a national public high school and state record, while Marshall, Lucy Kramer, Sheets, and Locke grabbed first in the 200 free relay in 1:34.44. Sheets, Jordan, Alexis Bullard, and Margaret Ramsey concluded the meet on a high note with a 3:25.00 victory in the 400 free relay.

The previous national public high school record had been posted by Carmel with a 1:541.68 in 2009.

In other events, Lawrence North's Julie Ogden won the 100 fly (54.61), while Zionsville's Zoe Mattingly picked up first in the 100 free (50.58). Homestead's Tori Bagan took the 100 breast (1:01.27), and Elwood's Mary Beth Dunnichay won the one-meter diving. Dunnichay, a 2008 U.S. Olympian, scored 544.05 points to shatter Kelci Bryant's state record of 504.10.
