Indian River Takes Early Leads at NJCAA Championships; Pair of NJCAA Records Fall

BUFFALO, New York, March 7. AT the end of the first day of competition at the NJCAA Championships held in Buffalo, N.Y. from March 7-10, Indian River Community College stands in the lead in both the men's and women's meets after sweeping all four relay events.

In the women's meet, Indian River owns 80 points with Vincennes University in second with 66 points and Lincoln College in third with 64 points. For the men, IRCC finished with 80 points, while Lincoln is in second with 68 points. Monroe Community College sits in third with 62 points.

Notably, in the final event of the night (men's 800 freestyle relay), IRCC broke the NJCAA record in the event, while Gideon Luow lowered the 200 freestyle standard during his leadoff leg.

Women's 400 medley relay
Indian River's team of Alexis Omans, Kim Martella, Shanda Casella and Amanda Neubig cruised to an easy win in 3:53.25 for the NJCAA title. Meanwhile, Lincoln's squad of Rachel Slattery, Samantha Gusich, Mekenzie Lewis and Gabrielle Klinefelter finished second in 4:15.72, while Vincennes' foursome of Lindsay Gieseking, Courtney Hendrix, Katie Carter and Lauren Swanson placed third in 4:18.26.

Men's 400 medley relay
Indian River's contingent of Nick Schwartz, Daniel Munoz, Gordon Touw Ngie Tjouw and Gideon Louw also claimed an easy win in 3:21.38. Lincoln's quartet of Michael Dellinger, Adam Johnson, Dale Cuffe and Joe Taylor took second in 3:36.82, while Vincennes' squad of Oluseyi Fatayi-Williams, Joseph Hroma, Allen Gardner and Ross Atkinson finished third in 3:43.67.

Women's one-meter diving prelims
Indian River dominated prelims with the top three spots. Danielle Mauser posted the top effort with 452.40 points, while teammates Kayla Purkiser (446.40) and Stacey Crawley (374.65) finished second and third, respectively.

Men's three-meter diving prelims
Indian River also did well on the men's side as Michael Wright (558.60) and Billy Beauregar (556.35) swept the top two prelim spots. Lincoln's Alex Morreto completed the top three with 447.80 points.

Women's 800 freestyle relay
In another crushing win, Indian River's team of Kalia Martin, Amanda Neubig, Amber Pheil and Vanessa Cox touched in 7:46.49 – nearly a minute ahead of the second-place time of 8:27.18 recorded by Vincennes' foursome of Lindsay Gieseking, Courtney Hendrix, Amanda Roberts and Lauren Swanson. Monroe Community's team of Caitlin McNamara, Melissa Fromm, Amy Buisman and Megan Boss rounded out the podium in 8:29.76.

Men's 800 freestyle relay
Indian River's contingent of Gideon Louw, Raul Martinez, Robert Gomez and Fernando Costez set the NJCAA record in the men's 800 free relay with a time of 6:36.50. That effort knocked three seconds off the 1998 standard of 6:39.52 also set by Indiana River. Additionally, Gideon Louw's leadoff 200 free time of 1:37.24 erased his brother Herman's NJCAA record time of 1:37.55 set in 1998.

Meanwhile, Lincoln's team of Andrew Skoog, Kris Will, Dillon York and Dale Cuffe placed second in 7:13.03, while Monroe Community's quartet of Kazuma Uda, Aram Salehi, Ryan Schirmer and Josh Clemons took third in 7:27.08.
