Husky Women Overtake Oregon State on Senior Day

SEATTLE, Washington, January 27. THE University of Washington women's swimming team (3-3, 1-2 Pac-10) shinned in its only home meet of the season, defeating Pac-10 rival Oregon State 138.5-123.5 on Saturday. The Huskies celebrated "Senior Day" as Blythe Murray was honored as UW's lone senior.

Washington won seven of 14 events and posted two top-10 times, including a school record in the 1000 freestyle by sophomore Kim Jasmer.

The Huskies charged out of the gates, taking first and third in the 200 medley relay. Mary Patterson, Jessica Buchanan, Erin Campbell and Lindsey Sharp combined to win the event in a time of 1:46.00.

Jasmer followed up with a record-breaking swim in the 1000 freestyle, winning the event in a time of 9:53.35. The time surpassed the previous record of 9:55.52 set by All-American Sharon Olson in 2004.

Oregon State battled back to take first and second in the 200 freestyle with Brittany Iverson winning the race in a time of 1:53.17, followed by Anna Crandall with a second place time of 1:53.36.

The Beavers chipped at the Huskies' lead with Saori Haruguchi winning the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.51. Washington's Patterson, however, had a stellar swim in the event to place second in the seventh-fastest time in program history (56.81).

Felicia Castaneda won the 100 breaststroke for Oregon State, touching the wall in a time of 1:04.39 to give the Beavers the 49-44 lead. UW's Jessica Buchanan placed second in the event with a time of 1:05.11.

Kayla Rawlings made it four victories in a row for the Beavers, winning the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:02.19, but the Huskies placed second, third and fourth behind the efforts of Marisa Chang (2:06.83), Kim Kripps (2:08.03) and Shandra Case (2:09.13) to stay within striking distance, 59-53.

Washington responded in the 50 freestyle, placing first and second in the event on the legs of Jasmer (24.14) and Sharp (24.50) as the Huskies regained the lead 68.5-62.5 heading into the break.

UW surged ahead in the 100 freestyle with a first place finish by Murray in a time of 52.60, followed by Maggie Bever with a second place finish in a time of 52.67.

Haruguchi recorded a first place finish in the 200 backstroke for Oregon State with a time of 2:01.35. Jennifer Gong (2:06.38) and Patterson (2:06.95) placed second and third in the race for Washington as the Huskies maintained a 91.5-77.5 advantage heading into the final five events.

Buchanan kept momentum on Washington's side, placing first in the 200 breaststroke and posting the team's fastest time of the season (2:17.67).

Jasmer won her third individual event of the day with a first place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:53.01), completing a sweep of the long distance freestyle races as UW went on top, 113.5-93.5.

Haruguchi won her third event of the day with a time of 55.41 in the 100 butterfly to bring the Beavers to within 15 points at 120.5-105.5.

Oregon State continued to battle, placing first and second in the 400 IM behind the efforts of Megan Evans (4:26.80) and Iverson (4:26.69) to bring OSU within six points at 125.5-119.5 heading into the final event.

The Huskies won the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:28.18 to seal the UW victory. Bever, Murray, Campbell and Jasmer combined for the winning swim as Washington closed out its dual meet season on a high note.

Washington returns to action Feb. 14-17 when it participates in the Pac-10 Championships in Long Beach, Calif.
