Houston Cruises at Own Quad Meet

HOUSTON, Texas, January 13. FOR the second straight day, the University of Houston Swimming and Diving team used dominating performances to cruise to dual-meet wins over Florida International, New Mexico State and North Texas on Saturday during a quad-meet at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.

The Cougars swept all five swimming events, won both relay events and swept the Top Two places on the 1-meter springboard to sweep the quad meet Saturday. UH enjoyed a 254-88 win over Florida International, a 233-110 win over New Mexico State and a 240-105 win against North Mexico State.

With the wins, the Cougars improved to 15-3 this season, pushing their UH single-season win total even higher.

The Cougars return to action with their final two regular-season home meets next weekend at the CRWC Natatorium. On Jan. 19, the Cougars play host to Texas A&M at 4 p.m. and wrap up their 2007 regular-season home schedule against Miami (Fla.) at 11 a.m., Jan. 20.

Cougar seniors Szintia Szanto, Rachel Gitelson and Alejandra Salazar will be honored in ceremonies prior to the Miami (Fla.) meet as part of Senior Day.

All regular-season Cougar Swimming and Diving meets are free and open to the public, which is invited to attend.

Szanto finished first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:05.33 and earned a similar place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a clocking of 1:05.27.

Sophomore Andrea Pa'lmai captured first place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:04.59 and claimed top honors in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:31.05.

Pa'lmai and fellow sophomore Sasha Schwendenwein led the Cougars to a 1-2 finish in the 500-yard freestyle, with Schwendenwein winning with a time of 5:04.07 and Pa'lmai a close second at 5:04.17.

Schwendenwein also won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.28.

The Cougars' 400-yard medley relay team of Jessica Shamburger, Szanto, Doreen Polotzek and Schwendenwein finished first to start the day. Shamburger, Schwendenwein, junior Nicole Vaiana and Szanto combined to lead the Cougars to a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.35 in the final event of the meet.

On the diving side, sophomore Anastasia Pozdniakova won her second event in as many days after tallying 325.15 points on the 1-meter springboard. Teammate and junior Ginni van Katwijk finished second in the event.
